It is a mostly cloudy but fine day in Melbourne this afternoon and the current Good (4) Flemington track rating is set to stay, giving the Chris Waller-trained super mare Winx the chance to score her 19th win from 23 starts on Good going.
The Hall of Famer is on show quite early on the card making her Flemington race debut in Race 5 at 3:15pm (AEDT) chasing her 21st straight turf triumph and 14th elite level success in the 2017 Turnbull Stakes.
The small Turnbull Stakes field of seven remains intact and no surprises on the short $1.18 quote for Winx to win on way to a shot at a record-equalling third Ladbrokes Cox Plate triumph on October 28.
Melbourne racing for Winx Day kicks off at 12:50pm (AEDT) with the unraced two-year-olds facing off in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes and continues through until Race 9 brings the action to a close in the Paris Lane Handicap at 5:45pm (AEDT).
The first Group race on the card is Race 4 when the early Darley Classic horses face off in the Gilgai Stakes field, which remains scratching-free.
There has however been two early withdrawals from Flemington Race 6 in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes leaving 15 three-year-old fillies contesting the early Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) lead-up.
There have also been three scratchings from The Bart Cummings 2017 field (Race 7) with Broadside, Crocodile Rock and Super Haze coming out of the race offering a Melbourne Cup ballot exemption to the winner, which more than ever looks the reigning champ Almandin’s for the taking.
Flemington Group racing finishes-up with Race 8, the Blazer Stakes 2017 field down to 14 with five scratched mares including the Darren Weir-trained Kenedna (2).
