Kris Lees’ last start Missile Stakes winning mare Invincible Gem has opened early favourite in Tramway Stakes 2017 betting for the Group 2 at Royal Randwick this weekend.
A key support act on Chelmsford Stakes Day on Saturday, this year’s Group 2 $200,000 Tramway Stakes (1400m) drew a final field of 10 horses set to face off in Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEST).
The post-field Tramway Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are led by four-year-old Invincible Gem ($3.40) who jumps from barrier five with Corey Brown retaining the ride.
Brown was aboard the mare first-up for her victory over multiple Group 1 winning stablemate Le Romain at the track on August 5 in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m).
Invincible Gem has had just the 10 career starts to date and boasts an imposing record of five wins and three seconds, including both of her previous assignments over the Tramway Stakes distance of 1400m.
During the autumn, she showed her potential with a second to Inference in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) run on a Heavy (10) and she looks the one to beat this weekend.
Occupying the second line of Tramway Stakes betting this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival are two equal $4.60 fancies with Happy Clapper and Ecuador jumping from barriers two and seven respectively.
The Patrick Webster-trained Teofilo seven-year-old Happy Clapper continues to show a zest for racing and is ready to go fresh on the back of two eye-catching trials when third to Winx and Redzel respectively over August.
His last official start was a fifth to Winx in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) during ‘The Championships’ on April 8, which followed his second to It’s Somewhat just seven days earlier in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).
Ecuador is another veteran runner in the Tramway Stakes field, the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained High Chaparral gelding having his second run as an eight-year-old.
First-up the horse put the writing on the wall finishing just over a half-length second behind Waller’s duo Winx (1st) and Foxplay (2nd) as a $26 roughie in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) a fortnight back.
During the autumn in Melbourne he was a dual third placegetter behind Black Heart Bart in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield, so has plenty of class and is right up to this.
Rounding out the current single-figure fancies in the post-field Tramway Stakes odds are the Chris Waller-trained import Tom Melbourne ($8) coming off a second over 1400m at Rosehill from August 12 and Hinchinbrook five-year-old The Virginian ($8.50) who ran a good second to Deploy here in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) two weeks ago.
