A gun field of Stradbroke Handicap bound sprinters face off in the last on Doomben Cup Day, the 2017 BRC Sprint betting tips and latest odds for which are detailed below.
There are 15 remaining runners in Doomben Race 8 at 4:36pm (AEST) on Saturday after the early scratching of Savanna Amour (6) from the $125,000 Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m).
Heading the updated BRC Sprint odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4.50 and firming for the win is the flying Splurge who chases a fourth win on the trot.
Jumping from gate eight with Kiwi hoop Opie Bosson to ride, the Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards-trained New Zealand raider debuts down under in the race at career start number 12.
He’s got outstanding lead-up form back home including a Group 3 win at Ellerslie two back and another 1200m victory last time out on April 29 at Te Rapa.
Up over further than that distance for the first time in 2017, Splurge is proven up to 1600m and runs well fresh making him a big favourite to run down on Saturday especially on a rain-affected track.
There are three other single-figure fancies in the BRC Sprint betting markets with the Darren Weir-trained Wangoom Handicap winner in the wet last time out Ulmann ($6.50), the 58kg top weight Jungle Edge ($7) who is Group 1 placed this season and a known mudlark, and Godolphin’s recent Gold Coast placegetter Federal ($8.50).
So will the best in betting get the job done or is there an upset BRC Sprint result pending from the likes of the Robert Heathcote-trained Hopfgarten ($11) or Snippets Land ($11)?
He gives the weight away, but this horse has been one of the best performing horses in the wet during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. Mick Bell’s six-year-old was a relative unknown until he led nearly all the way before being run down in the dying stages to finish a close third in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill. A Group 3 win in the wet followed before a brave third in Randwick’s Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) when only beaten 1.5 lengths. Out to improve on a fifth in the Wangoom Handicap under 60kg. Gets another wet track here, coming back two kilos in weight and can bounce back to winning form.
Talk of this horse coming out of the field in favour of next week’s Group 1, but if he stays in he’ll be up in the money at a nice price. Out wide in barrier 15 of 15, but he’s got excellent Doomben form (16-4-3-0), handles Heavy going and will be fit second-up after the brave second to Music Magnate in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) from late April. Carried 58.5kg that day and is back to 57kg here with Ronnie Stewart to ride should the honest local line-up.
Everything from the Weir stable is flying at the moment including this Sebring gelding who was impressive winning the Wangoom Handicap in the wet last time out. The step-up in distance will suit even better (15-4-3-1), is still in okay in the weights and drawn gate two.
