Five times Group 1 winner Black Heart Bart’s chances of making it back to back wins in the Group 1 $1m Darley Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday have soared after the big bay drew barrier two in the capacity field.
A final field of twenty sprinters plus three emergencies make up the 2017 Goodwood with the Darren Weir trained Black Heart Bart and Peter Gelagotis’ Malaguerra sharing the top weight of 59kg.
Regular rider Brad Rawiller will again be aboard Black Heart Bart while Malaguerra will jump from gate nine with Ben Melham in the saddle again.
Black Heart Bart scored his first Group 1 win in last year’s Goodwood and went on to collect another four Group 1 winning trophies in the last twelve months.
Following his Goodwood win, Black Heart Bart went on to win the Group 1 $500,000 Memsie Stakes (1400m) and the Group 1 $500,000 Underwood Stakes (1800m) both at Caulfield during the 2016 Melbourne Spring Carnival.
The Blackfriars six year old then continued his Group 1 winning form during the 2017 Melbourne Autumn Carnival with wins in the $500,000 Ladbrokes C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) and in the $500,000 italktravel Futurity Stakes (1400m), both at Caulfield again.
Weir will also saddle up Rageese who drew barrier eleven with Damian Lane taking over the reins from Luke Nolen who was aboard last start for a seventh to Malibu Style in the Listed $120,000 Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on April 22.
Malaguerra has been out of the placings at his last two starts and after winning the Group 2 $200,000 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on January 27 finished sixth to Black Heart Bart in the C.F. Orr Stakes before running seventh to Chautauqua in the Group 1 $2.5m Darley T J Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 1.
Gelagotis’ other Goodwood runner Illustrious Lad will jump from the outside barrier with Anthony Darmanin to ride.
Three year old Hey Doc is facing a tough task after drawing barrier twenty-one in the original drew and will jump from one form the outside if all three emergencies fail to gain a start.
Luke Currie ride Hey Doc to victory in the Group 1 $750,000 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 4 and will be back on board replacing Tim Clark who held the reins on the three year old when ninth to It’s Somewhat in the Group 1 $3m The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 1.
Victorian mare Secret Agenda and Damien Oliver have a great chance to win their second Morphettville Group 1 in as many starts together after they combined for an all the way win in the Group 1 $1m Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) on May 6 after drawing barrier five.
As well as Secret Agenda, Caulfield trainer Mick Price will also saddle up Bassett who was out of luck at the barrier drew, coming up with the twenty marble.
Mark Zahra takes over from Damien Oliver on Bassett who was an unlucky last start sixth to Karacatis in the Group 3 $175,000 D C McKay Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville on May 6.
The Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig will be represented with two Goodwood runners, Faatinah at barrier four with Regan Bayliss and Vega Magic at barrier 6 with Craig Williams.
Faatinah is coming off an improved last start fourth to Karacatis in the D C McKay Stakes while the well credentialed Western Australian sprinter Vega Magic will be having his first run for the Lindsay Park Team and his first run since winning the Group 3 $250,000 A.J. Scahill Stakes (1400m) at Ascot in Peth on December 10 last year.
In-form local sprinter Riziz has drawn the rails with Todd Panell to ride again.
