Boom Time on Trial for Sydney Cup 2017

A Caulfield win on Saturday’s Easter Cup Day card could prompt the Lindsay Park stable to give Boom Time a run in the rescheduled 2017 Sydney Cup the following weekend at Royal Randwick.

It was a disastrous scene last weekend in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), declared a no race after the fall and subsequent tragic death of Almoonqith.

Racing NSW will take two on the two mile classic on April 22, the rescheduled $2 million staying showdown now a possible end of autumn target for Flying Spur stallion Boom Time.

The five-year-old’s latest win was in the Listed Victoria Cup (2000m) at Caulfield on Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes Day, with his two subsequent runs seeing him finish out of the money.

Boom Time ran sixth to Humidor in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington then fifth in the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) behind Tally when beaten under two lengths.

He races again on Easter Saturday in easier company, getting the weight relief from apprentice Beau Mertens in the $100,000 Robert Taranto Handicap (2425m).

The horse is the $6 second elect to win in markets at Ladbrokes.com.au led by the exciting Robert Hickmott-trained import Hans Holbein ($2.15) coming off a big win over the mile and a half at Bendigo under big kilos.

There was a shuffle to the autumn schedule of Boom Time who was originally set to race at Caulfield last weekend before the meeting’s final three races were abandoned due to an electrical storm.

“I was really confident he could win last week but they called the races off, Lloyd Williams’ horse [Hans Holbein] will be very hard to beat but I think we will be the danger,” co-trainer David Hayes told Racing Victoria.

“If he won or run well we may supplement him for the Sydney Cup but we will make that decision after the weekend.”

Hayes won the Sydney Cup back in 1993 with Azzaam and will be keen to break the drought with an upset this year should Boom Time step-up and earn an acceptance.

The reopened Sydney Cup 2017 nominations close at 11:00am (AEST) on Easter Monday, April 17, before the final field is announced on the Wednesday.

Updated Sydney Cup odds are set to also reopen shortly at Ladbrokes.com.au making now the time to check out Australia’s leading online sportsbook.
