A host of the best in futures Australian Cup 2017 betting are nominated for a Caulfield run on Blue Diamond Stakes Day this Saturday in the Peter Young Stakes.
One of the key support acts on the card, this season’s $200,000 Group 2 Crown Lager Peter Young Stakes (1800m) drew 16 weight-for-age nominations led by last spring’s Caulfield Cup winner Jameka.
She along with a host of the other early entries are eyeing a Flemington run on March 11 on Super Saturday in the $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m).
Fiorente (2014) was the last galloper to complete the Peter Young Stakes – Australian Cup double and the Ciaron Maher-trained mare Jameka is favourite to be the next through Ladbrokes.com.au this autumn.
The champion four-year-old daughter of Myboycharlie was last seen running a fast-finishing fourth behind Black Heart Bart first-up in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) a fortnight back.
She was defeated only one and a half-lengths in a perfect resuming run from the proven stayer and will only improve getting out over more distance.
Likely favourite for the Peter Young Stakes 2017 this Saturday, Jameka is also the shortest-priced in pre-field Australian Cup odds at $4.60.
She trails only Chris Waller’s superlative mare Winx ($3.20) who is an unlikely runner, the champion vying for a 15th win on the trot in Sydney this Saturday heading towards April’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick.
The other single-figure fancy in all-in Australian Cup markets nominated for a lead-up run in the Peter Young Stakes on the weekend is the Darren Weir-trained improver Humidor ($7).
A fellow four-year-old, the Teofilo four-year-old was previously prepared in New Zealand before joining the Warrnambool stables of Weir late last year.
His last start was at Caulfield on February 11 in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) where he produced an outstanding effort to finish narrow runner-up behind stablemate Burning Front.
Weir has also nominated for former Perth Cup winning mare Real Love who ran fifth in the Carlyon Cup last start and in-form stallion Stratum Star.
Stratum Star has won his past two starts saluting over in WA on December 3 ion the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) before success at the Gold Coast in mid-January’s $1 million Magic Millions Trophy (2200m) carting a hefty 61kg to victory.
Returning in the Peter Young Stakes are a host of class autumn hopefuls including the Robert Hickmott-trained The United States who was runner-up in last year’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
The Galileo stallion is a veteran seven-year-old being kept safe in Australian Cup betting at an $11 quote following his Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) win over the distance in Sydney last March.
Other key Australian Cup-bound runners nominated for a lead-up run in the Peter Young this season include reigning Emirates Stakes winner Awesome Rock, the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Tom Melbourne and CF Orr Stakes third placegetter Ecuador.
