The major support act on the Zipping Classic Day program at Sandown Hillside on Saturday sees the three-year-olds face off in the Sandown Guineas 2015, betting tips and selections for which can be found below.
Due to run as Sandown Race 7 at 4:40pm (AEST), this year’s $250,000 Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) field features 15 hopefuls with betting at Ladbrokes.com.au led by the Tony McEvoy-trained filly Don’t Doubt Mamma ($4.20).
Drawn in gate five with Dwayne Dunn retaining the ride this weekend, the Not A Single Doubt filly caught the eye on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington with her smart two length win in the Listed Lexus Hybrid Stakes (1400m).
Now she gets another shot over the 1600m after she could only manage to finish four and a quarter lengths away sixth in her first attempt at the distance two back in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m).
Following Don’t Doubt Mamma in the current Sandown Guineas odds are the Darren Weir-trained Carbine Club Stakes winning colt Mahuta ($5.50) with the wide barrier 14 of 15 draw to overcome and the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Kiwi import He’s Our Rokkii ($7.50) drawn just one closer to the rails in gate 13.
So will the first three in betting run the trifecta or is there value to be found further down the markets tipping an upset Sandown Guineas result in the likes of New Zealand raider Dal Cielo ($10) from the in-form stables of Murray Baker or Carbine Club Stakes runner-up Patch Adams ($12)?
1st
#2 Mahuta ($5.50)
Melbourne Cup winning trainer Weir saddles-up this livewire Sandown Guineas hope, the son of Flying Spurt shooting for four straight wins. His past two have been in black-type company taking out the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) and the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m). He is in top form and proven over the distance, plus Brad Rawiller stays aboard. He does have the wide barrier 14 to overcome but is speedy enough to cross from the gate and only needs a bit of luck to be first past the post with the field chasing.
2nd
#15 Zafiki ($16)
The money says there are betting fillies in this line-up including the favourite Don’t Doubt Mamma, but this untapped Robert Smerdon-trained daughter of Makfi has genuine claims. She has had just the one run to date winning at Cranbourne on debut at the end of last month by 1.5 lengths over the mile. The distance then is a non-issue, she only has to handle the rise in class at just her second start. Can she live up to the challenge? The excellent debut suggests yes.
3rd
#6 Patch Adams ($12)
Great price offered for the Carbine Club Stakes runner-up prepared by Terry & Karina O’Sullivan. He’s got barrier 11 with regular rider Steven Arnold continuing his association on the Dane Shadow colt. The horse has one just once in 10 starts but has been running very well, is placed at the Sandown Hillside track and is being offered much shorter than the $41 he jumped at on Derby Day.
