Moonee Valley Vase 2015 Betting Tips

The 2015 Moonee Valley Vase for three-year-olds runs on Cox Plate Day this Saturday in Melbourne and our insider betting tips on the showdown for possible Victoria Derby types are detailed below.

Pasadena Girl

This year’s $200,000 Group 2 Dilmah Exceptional Tea Vase (2040m) runs as Moonee Valley Race 7 at 4:10pm (AEST) and features a final field of a dozen.

Favourite in the current Moonee Valley Vase odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the entire card this Cox Plate Day, at a firming $4 is the Mick Price-trained Tarzino who also leads markets for the $1 million Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington Saturday week.

He is bred to stay and this Tavistock colt is out to improve on a sixth in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), which he is tipped to do getting out over more distance on the weekend.

The next best fancied in the Moonee Valley Vase betting markets this spring are two 2015 Crown Oaks-bound fillies Pasadena Girl ($4.60) and Jameka ($4.80) drawn well in barriers one and five respectively.

So will the best of the staying colts Tarzino live up to the hype this weekend or can one of the Thousand Guineas graduates beat home the boys in a Vase upset?

Our 2015 Moonee Valley Vase Trifecta Tip is #10 Pasadena Girl from #2 Sovereign Nation and #4 Tarzino

1st

#10 Pasadena Girl ($4.60)

Rating the filly here with Peter Moody’s daughter of Savabeel expected to enjoy the extra metres on the back of a fourth in the Thousand Guineas (1600m) last time out. She gets two weeks between runs and was second three back in her first look at the Valley. Track holds no issues and she’s got class having won the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (16009m) in Sydney during the autumn. The inside gate sees her reserve energy for a late finish that could have the rest of the field finishing behind her.

2nd

#2 Sovereign Nation ($7)

On the ease but set to relish a mid-field barrier seven draw is this Encosta De Lago colt from the in-form David Hayes & Tom Dabernig training duo. Sovereign Nation has won two from four including his only previous Moonee Valley run two back in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m). A fourth in the Caulfield Guineas followed so he’s got ideal lead-up form, he only needs to handle the distance to be a winning chance in the end.

3rd

#4 Tarzino ($4)

The race favourite and market mover, Tarzino is the one to beat here and in the Derby over 2500m according to the bookies. He was finishing off well in the Guineas last time out and looking like he wanted more distance, which is also suggested by his pedigree. Barrier 10 sees jockey Craig Newitt take him back, switch him off and come at them late.
