The bookmakers are having a hard time separating the top two contenders for Saturday’s Thousand Guineas 2015 at Caulfield Racecourse with Pasadena Girl and Stay With Me battling for top spot in the markets for the mile classic in Melbourne.

One of four elite level features on the Caulfield Guineas Day program this weekend, where Ladbrokes.com.au is offering an incredible Best Tote or SP + 20% on all 10 races, this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) is due to jump as Race 8 at 5:05pm (AEST).
There are 11 three-year-old fillies making up the Thousand Guineas field and markets this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival with the Peter Moody-trained Pasadena Girl ($4.40) and the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Stay With Me ($4.60) the two best in betting.
Winner of the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) over the mile in Sydney last season, Savabeel filly Pasadena Girl ran a first-up second to Stay With Me in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley this time in before a last start fifth to Miss Gunpowder in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) on September 26.
She is tipped to appreciate the step up to the mile this weekend with Hugh Bowman taking over for Vlad Duric in the saddle from barrier seven that last produced a Thousand Guineas winner with Gallica (2008).
Hot on her heels in the markets is then Lindsay Park’s Street Cry filly Stay With Me who beat Pasadena Girl home in the Atlantic Jewel two back before her Prelude sixth that she’s out to improve on here.
There are also three other single figure hopes in an open Thousand Guineas market this season including Miss Gunpowder ($6) and Badawiya ($6) who are both last start winners.
Phillip Stokes’s Adelaide raider Miss Gunpowder has won four of her five career starts to date including the Thousand Guineas Prelude last time out.
Craig Williams retains the ride this weekend where she’s drawn the outside alley and is looking to become the first Thousand Guineas Prelude – Thousand Guineas double winner since Irish Lights (2009).
The Mick Price-trained Al Maher filly Badawiya has also won her last two on the trot including her exciting two length victory over Sacred Eye only last Sunday in Flemington’s Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m).
Now proven over the mile, Badawiya may be on the short turn around but she boasts a 50% Win Rate and the Edward Manifold Stakes has produced four Thousand Guineas winners in the past 10 years.
At more generous odds for the upset in Caulfield Race 8 on Saturday are the likes of Toby Edmonds’ Gold Coast-based daughter of Real Saga Sagaronne ($15) and Thousand Guineas Prelude fourth placegetter Super Cash ($15) drawn in barriers three and two respectively.
