Rank outsider Decision Time has delivered veteran trainer Clarry Conners a black type win late on Warwick Stakes Day at Royal Randwick this afternoon; completing an impressive start-to-finish performance to take out the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m).
Experiencing a great run from the gates having drawn barrier 2, jockey Christian Reith led the Foreplay gelding forward; setting on the heels of early lead Boss Lane, who set a good tempo for the field of nine towards the bend.
Taking up the running rounding onto the final straight, hugging the rails, Reith allowed Decision Time to steadily up the tempo before exploding forward; maintaining a strong enough sprint to find the line ahead of Boss Lane, Vashka and Heart Testa, who finished second, third and fourth in a photo.
Conners was elated with the eight-year-old’s performance for success in the 2015 Show County Quality and was quick to lay all the praise on the fortitude of the 32-start gelding.
“He’s part of the family, hasn’t won for two years, he’s broken tendons twice, has bled and just getting him back was marvellous,”
“He’s just a lovely horse and for him to win today has been one of the highlights of my life as a trainer.
“Getting the weight off him has been a hard job and keeping him sound and everything else, but im pretty chuffed with the win today I tell you.
“We know how good he is, but he’s just a heavy horse and he’s a good-doing horse. I never push him on the track but just nurse him because we want to keep him going.
“I know if I can get him right he’s going to be right there.
“Honestly it’s been two years since he won and he’s just been so great to us.”
Having last saluted in the 2013 edition of the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m), Decision Time missed the entire 2014 racing calendar through injury, and has steadily built to the task through seven starts prior to this afternoon’s success.
Decision Time was given virtually no chance for success in 2015 Show County Quality betting markets; jumping at a quote of $34 with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
