Black Vanquish Takes out Thoroughbred Club Cup

Classy two-year-old Black Vanquish has made a successful transition to black type racing at Caulfield Racecourse this afternoon; capping a perfectly-timed ride for success in the Listed Thoroughbred Club Cup (1200m).

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Katelyn Mallyon settled the Lonhro colt in prime position on the heels of early leaders Cool Snitzel and Northern Model, who set a consistent tempo away from the gates and rounding onto the final straight.

Offered a clear racing line upon pushing wide, Black Vanquish locked in a fierce pace battle with leading contender Payroll; poking a head clear in the final 100m and sustaining a strong-enough sprint to withstand a late charge from Pearl Star to post a second-consecutive race win.

Trainer Tom Hughes Jnr was understandably thrilled with Black Vanquish’s performance for success in the 2015 Thoroughbred Club Cup and revealed a trip to Brisbane for the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) may be on the cards.

“We just left it up to Katelyn and he just left from the barriers beautiful, there was good speed and he just did everything right,” Hughes said.

“He got there early and he still came away and won nice, so it was a really good win.

“We’ll just got home and see how thing are but we might even take him to Brisbane for the Sires’ Produce.

“You look at a lot of horses when they’re young and hope that they do be good one day and a lot don’t, but he’s done what we thought he would.”

Mallyon delivered a ride beyond her years for success in the 2015 Thoroughbred Club Cup and was pleased to post her first ever stakes win aboard Black Vanquish, for Tom Hughes Jnr.

“He does so good with his horses and a true credit to him with this horse, he’s been a little tricky horse at trackwork,” Mallyon said.

“Going forward it’s going to be really good for him to relax and hit the line the way he did, but he’s going to be a better three-year-old.

“I’ve been pretty unlucky with seconds in Stakes races so it’s good to get that win.”

Undoubtedly posting a career-best win to date in the 2015 Thoroughbred Club Cup this afternoon, Black Vanquish has now secured two wins from only three competitive starts.
