A standout performer over major Group 1 events in the early autumn, exciting sprinter Moment Of Change has completed a blistering barrier trial at Caulfield ahead of a Spring Racing Carnival initially geared towards the featured Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) on August 30th.
A three-time Group 1 champion, Moment Of Change returned to racing for second in the Group 2 McEwan Stakes (1000m) early in the 2013 spring, and while unlucky not to secure a victory at the highest level of Australian racing over four attempts through the carnival, returned to the winner’s circle with back-to-back triumphs in the Group 1 C.F Orr Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) in February.
Returning to the spelling paddock after a luckless run for twelfth behind the world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on March 8th, Managing Owner Rob Slade said the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 16th is likely to figure as the first point of call for the Barely A Moment gelding ahead of the Memsie Stakes two weeks later.
“Peter (Moody, trainer) has been telling us the horse has come back in great order and could be in for a big spring,” Slade told TVN.
“We will probably go to the Regal Roller first-up then two weeks to the Memsie, but Peter will make that call as he always does.”
Contesting an impressive total of seven wins and nine minor places from just 22 competitive race starts, Moment Of Change claimed back-to-back victories in his first two races during the 2011 spring but arguably hit peak condition for the first time through 2012; peaking with a maiden Group 1 victory in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) in September.
Finishing outside the places just three times over nine starts in his most recent preparation, the Moment Of Change finishing fourth in both the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) before claiming minor places in both the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) and Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) leading up to early autumn.
