Talented two-year-old Brazen Beau has justified resounding support from punters in the final hours leading up to this afternoon’s Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Brisbane’s Doomben Racecourse, strolling home to beat a fast finishing Looks Like The Cat and pre-post favourite Shaumari.
Jumping from the gates well, the I Am Invincible colt settled in prime position on the heels of early leaders Deuced, Eloping and Amizade, who set a noticeably quick tempo.
Finding a clear running line upon arriving on the final straight, Brazen Beau quickly took up the pace and opened a commanding lead, finishing more than two lengths in the clear.
Stable representative of trainer Chris Waller, Peter Muscat was understandably thrilled by Brazen Beau’s performance in the 2014 Champagne Classic, commenting on his class immediately after the race.
“He had a nice little freshen up in a trial and jump out to get him ready for this, and there’s still a lot of improvement to come.
“He was aided by a great ride from Nash; he’s done the job.
“He’s pretty special – he’s a bombproof two year old and very advanced physically.
The only two-year-old representative of Waller’s stables confirmed for the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, Muscat confirmed a tilt at the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) as the next step for Brazen Beau ahead of a hopeful appearance in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) on June 7th.
“He will certainly go to the Sires’ and if he comes through that intact and looks like he’ll get the mile, that’s the way he’ll go” Muscat said of the J.J. Atkins.
Leading jockey Nash Rawiller delivered a typically sensational ride on Brazen Beau in the 2014 Champagne Classic, and was quick to lay the praise on his talented partner.
“He’s has a nice early prep and a bit of a let up, but he’s held his residual fitness very well” Rawiller said.
“Chris was obviously confident in bringing him first-up here over 1200 and I think he’s class right through.
“He’s a pretty high quality horse. He just takes everything in his stride and as soon as those barriers open it’s game on; he’s very professional.”
