Likely favourite for the Group 2 AD Hollindale Stakes on the Gold Coast this weekend, Guy Walter’s triple Group 1 winning mare Streama also headlines the Doomben Cup 2014 nominations for the May 14 feature in Brisbane.

Last seen running fourth to Diamond Drille in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) on the back of a Doncaster Mile disappointment (17th) in Sydney, the Stratum five-year-old is one of 27 nominees for this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m).
That’s a slightly below par number of early entries, down from 39 last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
Winner of the George Main Stakes last spring, Streama adds an element of class to the possible Doomben Cup line-up however where she would be up over the distance for the first time since running second to star filly Mosheen in the Vinery Stud Stakes two years ago.
She backed up from that run to win her second Group 1, the Australian Oaks over 2400m, having also won the previous season’s Flight Stakes by six and a half lengths.
Streama is up over further than a mile for the first time since the Oaks this weekend in the Hollindale, the field for which features the bulk of the Doomben Cup nominations.
All but Precedence and Kiwi raider Military Move are nominated for the Doomben Cup and running in the 11-horse Hollindale Stakes field this year including the Chris Waller-trained duo of Moriarty and Junoob.
Haafhd six-year-old Junoob has won their last two over 2000m in Sydney, most recently beating home Hippopus in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood on a Heavy (8) Rosehill track back on April 5.
Waller is vying for back-to-back Doomben Cup wins having taken it out last winter with Beaten Up who beat home their stable mate, the fellow Waller-trained Foreteller.
Along with his Hollindale duo Sydney’s top trainer Waller has five other Doomben Cup hopes this year including JRA Plate runner-up from last weekend Danchai, Summer Cup winner I’m Imposing and Autumn Classic champ Vilanova.
Another interstate trainer that had a good run in the Doomben Cup last year was Melbourne’s Peter Moody who trained the fourth and fifth placegetters Manighar and Lights Of Heaven.
This season Moody has another two runners in the mix with Fat Al and recent Adelaide performer Floria.
Other notable nominees then include Darren Weir’s Easter Cup runner-up Akzar, the Gerald Ryan-trained Members’ Handicap winning mare Angel Of Mercy and Slow Pace who was third in the JRA Plate.
The complete Doomben Cup 2014 nominations are listed below with the first acceptances taken on May 7.
