The Ben, Will & JD Hayes-trained Cox...
A bumper field of fillies and mares has been accepted to face off in the 2014 Queen Of The South Stakes field at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide this Saturday.
While there are two Group 1 races on the program, the $175,000 Group 2 Pura Milk Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) is another top event running in South Australia this weekend.
There are 14 female gallopers making up this year’s line-up, the likely favourite of which is the Phillip Stokes-trained Maybe Discreet.
She’s drawn wide in gate 11 for the mile showdown but still looks one of the top fancies following her last start win at the track in the Listed City of Adelaide Handicap (1400m) from April 12.
The four-year-old Shamardal mare though is up in class and distance and under the set weights plus penalties conditions will carry the 59.5kg top weight with Dom Tourneur retaining the ride.
A traditional Queen Of The South Stakes lead-up, the City of Adelaide Handicap has provided many of the top chances in this Saturday’s showdown including second and third placegetters Golden Penny and Stella Lante.
The Richard Jolly-trained Golden Penny has work to do from out wide however in gate 12 jumping one outside their last start conqueror, while John Hyam’s consistent Starcraft four-year-old Stella Lante has a better barrier in five.
Along with Maybe Discreet there are then three other last start winners in the mix including the David Jolly-trained Danish Spy also out wide in gate 13 who won over this track and distance last month.
Saturday Affair (barrier eight) then represents gun training duo Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas, the Michael Rodd mount coming off a commanding win over the 1400m at Oakbank just last weekend.
Mick Price’s interstate raider Tango’s Daughter then finishes off the last start winning chances, the Melbourne-trained Redoute’s Choice filly having claimed victory in her past two runs.
The latest of those was a win in the Listed Nitschke Stakes (1400m) here at Morphettville a fortnight ago, an effort she could repeat now having had a look at the track.
Another in-form visitor in the mix here is then the Anthony Freedman-trained Kazaluk in gate two, the Flemington-based Red Ransom mare coming off a good first-up third at home over 1400m with improvement to come from this known stayer as she goes up in distance.
Melbourne’s premier trainer Peter Moody meanwhile prepares Floria in this race, the Savabeel six-year-old to be ridden by Luke Nolen from a gun gate four draw.
The Group 1 performer hasn’t won a race since the Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1600m) at Caulfield back in mid-November last year but should be able to improve on her last start seventh where a Heavy (8) track got the better of her in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill at the start of the month.
