Bill Stutt Stakes 2013 Tips for Moonee Valley Tonight

Moir Stakes Night will light up Moonee Valley Racecourse this evening with a top eight-race program that includes the three-year-olds’ 2013 Stutt Stakes – betting tips and selections for which can be found right here.

Our 2013 Stutt Stakes Trifecta Tip is #4 San Diego from #1 Shamus Award and #2 Divine Calling

Due to jump as Race 6 at 8:45pm (AEST) this spring’s $220,000 Group 2 City Jeep Stutt Stakes (1600m) features a field of 12 youngsters out to strut their stuff ahead of some of the upcoming Group 1s for their age group.

Stutt Stakes betting is currently led by the market mover Cluster who has overtaken Divine Calling for top spot in the markets.

Earlier punters could get the Anthony Cummings-trained Caulfield Guineas-bound colt at $4.80 but they have since firmed into $4.20 as they get their first look at the mile.

Divine Calling ($4.40 out to $4.60) now occupies the second line of Stutt Stakes odds, Gai Waterhouse’s son of Stratum to be ridden by Damien Oliver as they shoot for back-to-back Moonee Valley wins.

The other notable hopes are then the up-and-coming Late Charge ($6.50) coming off a Henry Bucks sixth, the Danny O’Brien-trained McKenzie Stakes runner-up Shamus Award ($7) and Peter Snowden’s super consistent Victoria Derby hope San Diego ($7).

So will tonight’s Bill Stutt Stakes winner come from one of these hopes under $10? Or is there an upset on the cards from a double figure chance such as Honey Steel’s Gold ($15) or Countryman ($16)?

1st

#4 San Diego ($7)

San Diego is worth including in all selections and at the $7 backing for the win could be a juicy bet! Snowden-trained galloper drawn on the rails, where they won’t want to go too far back from, but capable of a very good run. Won two from three in their opening prep, including over the Caulfield mile, before a brave third to Long John in the Henry Bucks last time out. Will be fitter for that run, which they jumped at a ridiculous $81 for!

2nd

#1 Shamus Award ($7)

Had form around better horses last season when defeated just a long neck to run second in the Group 2 Sires Produce at Flemington. Also ran in the Group 1 Blue Diamond and was far from disgraced when fifth to Miracles Of Life. Last start seventh to Caulfield Guineas favourite Long John in the Henry Bucks over 1400m wasn’t a bad effort and they are going to relish getting up to the 1600m. Tongue tie also goes on to help them breath after their last effort, and Craig Williams stays on.

3rd

#2 Divine Calling ($4.60)

We’re taking the easing price on the former favourite and believe they can handle the class rise here after their smart two length win over the 1500m at the track a fortnight ago. Go up to the mile for the first time too but ease of the 1500m success indicates they’ll like the distance. First-up fifth to Fast ‘N’ Rocking in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes and think they’ve come on really well since then. Tipping a real fight for these minor placings in this one but think Divine Calling is worth taking.
