14 Horse 2013 Doomben Cup Field Released

A final field of 14 smart stayers has been accepted for the Doomben Cup 2013 at Doomben Racecourse this Saturday, the 2000m showdown the latest Group 1 feature of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Due to run as Race 7 at 3:40pm (AEST) the $500,000 Group 1 Kirks Doomben Cup (2000m) has thrown up a number of upsets in recent years and so there could be plenty of value to be found among this year’s hopefuls.

Early favourite is the Peter Moody-trained mare Lights Of Heaven who came up trumps with barrier five, Luke Nolen to ride.

The former Group 1 winning Zabeel five-year-old will be after her third win on the trot following success in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood and Group 2 Hollindale Stakes at her two most recent starts.

Lights Of Heaven also boasts an excellent record in Queensland having run second to Mawingo in last year’s Doomben Cup on the back of a Hollindale Stakes second before taking out both the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) and the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) by a collective six lengths.

Moody has also excepted for Manighar (barrier nine), the Linamix seven-year-old coming off a distant seventh to stablemate Reliable Man in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).

A star in the autumn winning a Group 1 triple last year, Manighar is out to return to form but faces a tough field here.

The other big name hopeful is then Chris Waller’s Hollindale Stakes runner-up at the start of the month Foreteller, the Dansili six-year-old looking to turn the tables on Lights Of Heaven after going down by less than a length to her at the Gold Coast.

Winner of the Ranvet Stakes over the 2000m two back Foreteller will again be ridden by Hall of Fame hoop Jim Cassidy this weekend as they jump one inside the favourite from a nice gate four draw.

Also drawn well are the likes of Waller’s veteran nine-year-old Danleigh (barrier six) and the Leon Corstens-trained Zabeel stallion Zabeelionaire (barrier seven).

Along with Danleigh and Foreteller Waller will also be represented in this year’s Doomben Cup field by Beaten Up who has drawn barrier one.

The Rowley Mile runner-up was also entered for the Scone Cup this Friday but their nice Doomben Cup draw is sure to see them target Group 1 glory this weekend.

Other notable hopefuls then include the Grahame Begg-trained Secret Admirer who could be retired after Saturday, Group 2 winning Kiwi visitor Pimms Time and the Gai Waterhouse-trained VRC St Leger winning High Chaparral colt Hippopus.
