Today the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) unveiled the 2011 Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy at its’ Flemington Family Fun Day.
Three-time Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss had the honours of revealing this year’s Melbourne Cup trophy at a prestigious ceremony held as part of ongoing Heritage Week activities at the home of the Melbourne Cup, Flemington Racecourse.
The annual Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) is the world’s richest handicap showdown with prize money set at over $6 million and this year’s 151st edition of the testing two-mile feature will run on Tuesday November 1, 2011 as the showpiece of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
The 2011 Melbourne Cup Trophy is valued at $175,000 and will be kept at the Flemington Heritage Centre when not on tour.
Crafted by Hardy Brothers Jewellers in Brisbane, the ‘Loving Trophy’ has increased $25,000 in value from last year due to the rising gold price in Australia.
