Retrieve could deliver Kerrin McEvoy a much needed win.
Kerrin McEvoy will be hoping Retrieve can salvage a victory today to turn around what has been a week to forget for the star jockey.
He will ride the gelding in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas in a week that has seen a track work fall force him to miss midweek rides, spend hours in a hyperbaric chamber and then jump back on a horse in a barrier trial only to have it rear in the stalls and be withdrawn.
“It’s been a forgettable few days,” McEvoy said.
“But I will be right, I’ve got some nice rides and I’m really looking forward to Retrieve.”
He will be up against it though with star Kiwi import Jimmy Choux coming into the race unbeaten.
“Retrieve just keeps coming at them in his races, he’s relentless,” McEvoy said.
“The Rosehill and Randwick tracks will suit him better than Warwick Farm. He was very strong at the finish the day he won the Gloaming Stakes on this track.”
The barrier draw could cause issues though starting form wide in gate 11 and the probability the race will be run at a slow pace.
“The lack of speed in the race does worry me a little bit,” he said.
“From that barrier, and with the Derby in mind, he is more a midfield-to-back horse but that could change. I’d rather there is a bit of pace on for him.”
McEvoy will have seven chances at Rosehill today with some good prospects like Disputes in the Magic Night Stakes, Under The Eiffel in the Ajax Stakes and Strike One in the Manion Cup.
