The next major race day of the 2011 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival will run at the Royal Randwick this Saturday, February 12, featuring a bumper eight-race programme including the $100,000 Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m).
The 2011 Canonbury Stakes nominations have attracted just eight two-year-old colts and geldings with the better juveniles running at Caulfield in the Blue Diamond Preludes on Saturday.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Wild And Proud is one of the only Canonbury Stakes entries with a career start behind them.
Sure to open one of the favourites on Saturday, the Snowland colt ran an eye-catching third in the Listed NSW Breeders Plate (1000m) on debut back in October.
Other notable entries for this year’s Canonbury Stakes include the Peter Moody-trained Huegill, Gillian Heinrich’s unraced Exceed And Excel colt Karma Force and Gerald Ryan’s Fastnet Rock colt Rock Monster also on debut.
More Than Ready colt Huegill is making their race debut on Saturday after winning a barrier trial on January 2.
Although they are also nominated for the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) at Caulfield along with stable mates Covered In Class, Golden Archer and Eclair Desire, Huegill is likely to be accepted for the Canonbury.
The headline race at Randwick this Saturday is the $200,000 Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) where Gai Waterhouse is seeking back-to-back wins with her smart filly More Strawberries.
At Caulfield, the opening Group 1 showdown of the season is also running on Saturday with the 2011 CF Orr Stakes.
