The Big Steel has won the opening race on the VRC Crown Oaks Day card today, beating home a field of quality gallopers in the $100,000 La Vie En Rose Vase (1800m) at Flemington.
The four-year-old grey gelding trained by Matt Laurie in Mornington, had questions asked over their ability pre-race but won well in the end in an upset having started at generous $51 odds through Luxbet.
The race was run at a solid pace with Hood leading the field throughout the early stages.
Sweeping into the turn, the Guy Walter-trained Hood kicked away again and lead by about two lengths on the straight.
However Hood couldn’t hold on all the way as The Big Steel, ridden beautifully by Danny Nikolic, came up strong and fast through the middle to hit the front with 100m to go.
Digging in, The Big Steel drew away to win by a length over the Michael Moroney-trained Viking Hero who battled away well with Vesper finishing two lengths away third.
A progressive runner, The Big Steel has now won four of their 10 career starts with connections looking at a 2000m run at Moonee Valley for the son of Urgent Request next.
The next race to jump is the $150,000 Listed Crown Promenade Stakes (1100m) for mares, due to jump at 11:50pm (AEDST).
Currently Jerezana is the favourite, but for better value Races.com.au are tipping De Lightning Ridge so head to Luxbet now to get them at the hottest odds!
