Greg Euerell-trained Apache Cat won the Group 2 Schweppes Stakes at Moonee Valley today, securing him with a trip to Hong Kong.
Ridden by Damien Oliver, the seven-year-old gelding managed to surpass early leaders Bank Robber and Lucky Secret to fight out the final stretch with stablemate Mic Mac.
Oliver darted the popular gelding through on the rail, giving Apache Cat room to break free and defeat runner-up Mic Mac. The wins giving trainer Greg Eurell a quinella on Cox Plate Day.
Bank Robber managed a respectable third ahead of Ortensia in fourth.
Last year’s Schweppes Stakes winner Lucky Secret was just back in fifth.
It was the eighth Group 1 win for Apache Cat, who has now won 19 races. The impressive victory, which was met with a champion’s ovation by the crowds at Moonee Valley means Eurell will take the horse to Hong Kong next month for the Group 2 Sprint Trial in November.
