2017 Rough Habit Plate Betting on Queensland Derby Hopes

The Rough Habit Plate 2017 betting markets for this weekend’s Queensland Derby lead-up at Doomben Racecourse are now out and Mongolian Wolf is the clear favourite.

A winner of three of his past five starts, the now Darren Weir-trained Kiwi expat is one of 16 three-year-old stayers engaged for Saturday’s $125,000 Group 3 Mittys Rough Habit Plate (2000m).

Scheduled as the last on the eight-race Doomben 10,000 Day program Rough Habit Plate betting at Ladbrokes.com.au has Pluck gelding Mongolian Wolf at an easing $3.80 to continue his winning ways down under.

In his Australian debut on April 15 at Royal Randwick, Mongolian Wolf posted a nice win over Veladero in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) and that form is tipped to stack up this weekend in an early lead-up to the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm next month.

Brenton Avdulla rides the favourite on Saturday from barrier one and if he keeps the horse out of trouble should be hard to run down especially on a rain-affected track.

Two runners are installed as the equal $6 second elect in the Rough Habit Plate odds with the Frank Packer runner-up Veladero out to turn the tables and the widely-drawn Order Again in the far outside barrier (16 of 16).

Chris Waller saddles-up Medaglia D’Oro colt Veladero who has winning form up to 1800m and who should be right up in the finish again on a Heavy track with Kerrin McEvoy replacing Hugh Bowman in the saddle.

Order Again is the best of the local hopes, the Brian Smith-trained Iffraaj gelding last seen running away for a seven and a half-length 1500m Eagle Farm win in the mud on May 3.

He is yet to finish in the money from two previous Doomben starts, but extending out to this distance on another wet course puts him right in the mix as he steps up notably in class.

Rounding out the single-figure chances are Violate ($6.50) and the market mover Shocking Luck ($8.50 into $7) who comes off three second place efforts.

Brent Stanley trains Violate who improved on a Frank Packer Plate sixth to Mongolian Khan two back to go down by the barest of margins in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) at Eagle Farm a fortnight back.

The son of Sebring only has one win on the record from 11 starts to date over just 1100m, but looks like he’ll enjoy getting out over more metres.

The punters are starting to warm to Shocking Luck from the New Zealand stables of Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards, the Shocking gelding from across the Tasman coming off a debut down under when second at Ipswich on May 1.

That was over 1500m and the step up to 2000m will suit to a tee as the horse previously finished runner-up in a Group 2 over the metres back home in February.
