This Saturday one of the popular Victorian Cup races will take place with the Ladbrokes Mornington Cup 2017 field attracting a host of in-form stayers including Adelaide Cup winner Annus Mirabilis.

Due to run as Mornington Race 7 at 4:30pm (AEDT), this season’s lucrative $300,000 Listed Ladbrokes Mornington Cup (2400m) has drawn a full field of fourteen gallopers plus two emergencies.

Drawn in barrier four with Jamie Mott to ride is the Stuart Webb-trained import Annus Mirabilis, last seen taking out the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on March 13.

The six-year-old son of Montjeu drops from the two miles to the mile and a half this weekend chasing the double and goes up two kilos to 57.5kg.

The weight rise and distance drop present a challenge and currently Annus Mirabilis pays $15 in the latest Ladbrokes Mornington Cup odds at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au.

Leading Ladbrokes Mornington Cup betting this autumn at $2.60 is the in-form The Gold Trail prepared by English horseman Charlie Appleby.

The Godolphin-raced international raider makes his debut down under in the event and is a gun over the 2400m boasting five wins and a third from eight previous starts at the distance.

He was last seen winning over the metres in Dubai carting 58.5kg to victory in late January and is allocated the same weight on Saturday.

Craig Williams rides the visitor from barrier six and the bookies are taking no chances with The Gold Trail who is likely to target the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) in Melbourne over the spring.

There are three other runners under double figures for the win including market mover Boom Time ($8.50) in gate three with Dwayne Dunn booked for the ride.

Lindsay Park horses are flying and this five-year-old stallion is down in grade after the sixth to Humidor in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) last time out at Flemington on ‘Super Saturday’.

He has winning form up to 2500m and will appreciate the extra metres in the Ladbrokes Mornington Cup field, also coming back from 59kg at WFA to 57.5kg on the weekend.

Also at $8.50 is Dark Eyes in barrier two on 55.5kg chasing a third win on the trot and fourth from his past five starts.

Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott prepare the progressive Snitzel four-year-old whose last start on March 5 produced the narrow Listed Canberra Cup (2000m) win.

The last of the hopes under $10 is Tally ($9.50) up in the weights with 59kg and coming off back-to-back sevenths.

John O’Shea trains the four-year-old son of Street Cry who comes out of the Australian Cup and is after his first win since the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley twelve months ago.

Other notable Ladbrokes Mornington Cup horses this season include Tony McEvoy’s last start Roy Higgins Quality winning seven-year-old Big Memory ($15) and the Darren Weir-trained Goldstream ($13).
