2016 Chatham Stakes Field & Betting Odds: Takedown Topweight

The Gary Moore-trained Takedown is allocated top-weight in the Chatham Stakes 2016 field for Crown Oaks Day, betting on the Flemington feature now open.

Originally held on Victoria Derby Day the Saturday before, this year’s $200,000 Group 3 L’Oreal Paris Stakes (1400m) – registered as the Chatham Stakes – is set to run as Flemington Race 6 at 3:35pm (AEDT) tomorrow.

The handicap showdown has attracted a final field of 15 middle distance sprinters led by Takedown (59.5kg) who has suffered a wide barrier 12 draw.

Jockey Blake Shinn continues his association with the in-form Stratm four-year-old who has won two of his past three starts this spring.

The Rosehill-based gelding took out the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) – Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) double at Randwick first and second-up before heading south.

He was last seen racing on Caulfield Cup Day when second to Voodoo Lad in the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m).

On Saturday he rises a kilo from the 58.5kg he carried in that October 15 race and currently pays $5.50 in the Chatham Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Heading the Chatham Stakes betting markets this Melbourne Cup Carnival at $4.40 is Rageese on the 54kg minimum.

Drawn gate eight with Damian Lane to ride, the Darren Weir-trained Street Cry stallion comes off a Moonee Valley lead-up.

He finished runner-up in a Benchmark 90 over 1500m on Manikato Stakes night, and from his seven runs at Thursday’s distance has enjoyed two wins and a second.

He hasn’t won since a Black-Type at Morphettville back in late April, but drops from 59.5kg last start for his first Flemington run on Ladies’ Day.

Weir has also accepted for the returning Kenjorwood who jumps one outside his stablemate in barrier nine with Brad Rawiller in the saddle.

Paying $31 as a roughie in the markets, the Snippetson seven-year-old hasn’t raced since a second over 1800m at the track back in July.

The other best in betting at an equal $5.50 with Takedown is the early market mover, also drawn wide out in gate 13, Clearly Innocent.

Money has come in for the Greg Bennett-trained Not A Single Doubt gelding after his hoop Kerrin McEvoy rode the 2016 Melbourne Cup winner Almandin to victory on Tuesday.

McEvoy replaces Tommy Berry in the saddle of Clearly Innocent, whose last run produced a fourth behind Keen Array in a Listed Caulfield race over 1200m on October 12.

The only other single-figure hopeful is the rails-drawn Federal ($7) from the Godolphin stables for trainer John O’Shea.

James McDonald rides the Medaglia D’Oro five-year-old once more, the gelding out to improve on a fourth behind Group 1 winner The United States in the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) on Cox Plate Day.

Federal drops from 59kg to 54.5kg on Thursday and comes back to his preferred distance that he boasts three wins, two seconds and two thirds over from eight 1400m runs to date.

Other notable hopes after an upset at double-figures include the Ciaron Maher-trained distance specialist Akavoroun ($12), the Chris Waller-trained Amovatio ($13) racing in Melbourne for the first time since Emirates Stakes Day last year and his imported stablemate Arod ($14) in Australia for the first time in 12 months.
