Former Perth galloper Miss Rose De Lago has returned to racing in the best way possible this afternoon; producing an impressive sprint to take out the featured Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield Racecourse.
Trainer Danny O’Brien was bullish that Miss Rose De Lago would be tough to beat in the PB Lawrence Stakes, and the mare did her chances of success no harm whatsoever when jumping well and take an ideal position in transit off the pace of Lord Of The Sky, The Cleaner and Mahuta.
Offered a clear racing line upon arriving at the final straight, the Encosta De Lago mare immediately responded when asked for an extra effort by jockey Damien Oliver; pulling clear with 150m to run and finding the line a half-length ahead of a tough Jacquinot Bay; Entirely Platinum running on for third.
Oliver was given the opportunity to ride both Lord Of The Sky and Suavito in the PB Lawrence Stakes, and was thrilled that he made the right decision to partner Miss Rose De Lago.
“Full credit to Danny O’Brien – he got her going great for her first-up effort at this race and she ran right up to her trials,” Oliver said.
“I was locked into her a couple of weeks ago before they decided to bring Lord Of The Sky here, but I was happy to be riding her the way she’s been going.”
O’Brien was thrilled with the mare’s first-up run for success this afternoon, and revealed the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley in three weeks will figure as her next point of call.
“She’s got a great record here, I think it’s four wins from five starts,” O’Brien said.
“It all went to plan for her today. She needs that solid tempo over 1400m – probably a mile and even further is better for her.
“Obviously we got a really strongly-run race and she was able to soak it up and still be strong on the line.
“We had a look at the program and the mares races don’t stretch out until a bit later in the spring, so we thought it was a good opportunity to test her against the boys.
“There’s three weeks now until the Dato and she’s been very effective at Moonee Valley in the autumn.
“Obviously the real top line horses will be here for a fortnight for the Memsie, so we sort of got on the weaker leg and hopefully get can go to Moonee Valley in three weeks, turn up and be hard to beat again.
“We’d love to win a Group 1 with her, because she’s won two Group 2s in her last three races. We’ll get these early ones out of the way, but there’s races like the Toorak Handicap later in the spring where she might get her chance.”
Miss Rose De Lago has posted nine wins and a further seven minors through twenty-nine career starts, since debuting for Simon Miller in 2013.
