Headwater Tops 2015 Todman Stakes Nominations

Undefeated colt Headwater prepared by Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes heads the Todman Stakes 2015 nominations at Royal Randwick this Saturday on way to the Golden Slipper.

There are just seven colts and geldings entered for this year’s $300,000 Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m), also known as the Todman Slipper Trial, with nominations extended until 11am (AEDT) on Tuesday.

Nominations are also open until then for the fillies’ edition, the $300,000 Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) drawing just 10 nominees including the John O’Shea-trained Ottoman.

A son of Exceed And Excel, Headwater currently shares top spot in the futures Golden Slipper odds at Ladbrokes.com.au for the $3.5 million Group 1 feature run over 1200m at Rosehill on March 21.

He pays $5 equal with O’Shea’s Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) winner at Warwick Farm last Saturday, Exosphere.

Headwater has had two runs for two wins to date across two states, a Moonee Valley win on debut in late December followed by his successful Sydney maiden on February 21 to win the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill by a tidy two and a quarter lengths, and is sure-to-be odds-on favourite for the Todman Stakes this year.

O’Shea and Godolphin meanwhile have entered another Exceed And Excel colt Chamarel, best known for his third to Vancouver in the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) in January.

Gai Waterhouse’s Canonbury Stakes winner Vancouver is also entered for the Todman this weekend, the Medaglia D’Oro colt coming off a winning Randwick trial from February 23.

He has won both career starts so far in black type company and occupies the second line of all-in Golden Slipper betting at $6.

The next best fancied is then Furnaces at $15, the colt also in the mix for O’Shea this weekend following a second to Haptic in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) at the track on February 14 and a Warwick Farm barrier trial win on the 27th.

Rounding out this year’s Todman Stakes nominations are then the Clarry Conners-trained Starcraft colt Dorf Star, Chris Waller’s lightly raced Vanbrough who won on debut over 1200m at Randwick on February 28 defeating Chamarel, and Jet Spur gelding Mishani Honcho.

Well tried with eight runs for four twins, a second and two thirds to date the Les Ross-trained Brisbane galloper won the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) on the Gold Coast in late January.

His most recent run was then a Sydney debut on February 21 at Rosehill when third, beaten just over four lengths by Headwater in the Silver Slipper.

See below for the current Todman Stakes 2015 nominations open now until tomorrow morning before the final acceptances revealing the field on Wednesday.
