2015 The Vanity Betting Tips

A quality line-up of fillies will face off in one of the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Day support races on Saturday, betting tips for The Vanity 2015 detailed below.

Set Square

Nine three-year-old female gallopers remain in the mix for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) after Greg Eurell scratched Primerio from the race due to some poor bloodwork.

Of those still in contention, Wawail is the clear favourite and market mover in from $2.60 to $2.25 to win from barrier eight with Michael Walker in the saddle.

Prepared by Lindsay Park’s David Hayes & Tom Dabernig, Wawail is an undefeated daughter of Lonhro who has won all four of her race starts to date including the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) at Sandown last November.

She returned to racing on January 31 at Flemington over 1100m and beat home Clover Lane by a length in a run connections hope she can repeat over more distance this weekend.

In an open market four other fillies sit under $10 in the current The Vanity odds including the rails-drawn Maastricht ($4.80) coming off a first-up fourth to Meursault over 1250m at Canterbury on February 6 and the lightly-raced Fenway ($7) to be ridden by Damien Oliver.

So will the favourite Wawail salute for The Vanity punters?

Or is there an upset in Flemington Race 3 on the cards from a longer priced hopeful such as returning Crown Oaks winner Set Square ($7.50) or even the Robbie Griffiths-trained Mossbeat ($21)?

Our 2015 The Vanity Trifecta Tip is #1 Set Square from #2 Wawail and #5 Sweet And Speedy

1st

#1 Set Square ($7.50)

Nice odds being offered for the returning Group 1 winner even if this will be short of her best distance. Ciaron Maher’s Reset filly won the VRC Oaks over 2500m in November at just her fourth start after progressing from a three-year-old’s maiden at Donald that September to the Oaks during the Cup Carnival. She’s progressive and has won three from four to date. Shortest distanced win though is a mile so how she goes first-up over 1400m will be key, but Maher believes she’s a chance and she’s definitely got enough class for us to go out on a limb and take the nice odds.

2nd

#2 Wawail ($2.25)

She’s the one to beat and the markets reflect that. Jumps one on the inside of Set Square and should be an interesting showdown. Yet to taste defeat in four starts and is a black type winner Sandown. Also boasts the fitness edge after a first-up win here at Flemington over 1100m late last month. It was a nice victory and one that suggested she was ready for more distance again that she gets here. Carried 57.5kg that day and is down two kilos to 55.5kg on Saturday also meeting Set Square a kilo better off so will take some beating.

3rd

#5 Sweet And Speedy ($12)

Peter Moody has three in the race and all aren’t without claims for a top three run. Drawn in barrier seven, this Street Cry filly gets Luke Nolen which suggests she’s the best of the stablemates in her trainer’s eye. Won first-up over this distance at Sandown on Australia Day after a length spell to defeat Mossbeat by a nostril flare from a wide gate with 57kg. Better barrier here and drops three kilos to 54kg so the set weights plus penalties suit her.
