2014 Kingston Town Classic Betting Tips

The last Group 1 of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival takes place at Ascot Racecourse this weekend with a full field of stayers facing off in the Kingston Town Classic 2014.

Betting on this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m), running as Race 8 in WA on Saturday, is led by Chris Waller’s eastern state raider Moriarty.

The seven-year-old Sydney visitor is at $4 to win his first Group 1 after a close third in the Railway Stakes over the Ascot mile on November 22, a race that has produced more Kingston Town Classic winners in the past decade than any other race.

Moriarty gets a weight relief here under the weight-for-age conditions and the bookies at Ladbrokes.com.au are predicting that to be enough for him to turn the tables on the two mares that beat him home last time out – Elite Belle and Balmont Girl paying $7 and $7.50 in Kingston Town Classic betting.

The only other runners under double figures to win are then the Grant Williams-trained Disposition ($6.50) coming off his first career loss when runner-up in the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) and winner of that race Rommel ($9) with the outside barrier to overcome here.

So are these the horses you should back to win on the weekend?

Or is there an upset Kingston Town Classic result on the card?

Our 2014 Kingston Town Classic Trifecta Tip is #11 Elite Belle from #2 Moriarty and #3 Smokin’ Joey

1st

#11 Elite Belle ($7)

Money is coming in for Grant Williams’ six-year-old daughter of Canny Lad who beat a similar field of rivals home in a weaving ride from William Pike in the Railway Stakes. That race is the best form line to follow into the Kingston Town Classic, but no horse has done the double since Sniper’s Bullet in 2009. Despite this and the fact only three mares have won the Kingston Town over the years, think the money trail is worth following with Elite Belle to get a gun run from barrier 10 (into 7) with the race’s most successful jockey Paul Harvey jumping on in the place of Pike.

2nd

#2 Moriarty ($4)

Moriarty put in an enormous late run to finish right up there when third in the Railway Stakes and gets the weight advantage here under WFA. Good barrier (3) and Hong Kong hoop Douglas Whyte has the ride so there’s lots to like about Waller’s interstate raider. Doesn’t have the most experience at the track but handled it just fine a fortnight ago and has won over the distance before. Favourites have won only three times in the past 10 years.

3rd

#3 Smokin’ Joey ($14)

With the first three over the line in the Railway at single-figures it’s surprising Wez Hunter’s fourth placegetter in that race is at this price, especially as he was only a length off the winner and running just as well in the final stages as Saturday’s favourite Moriarty. Is a former Group 1 winner (at $40 odds) during the winter in Adelaide and could surprise a few here again. Punters are wary of the distance (he’s more proven as a stayer) but Hunter thinks he’ll run it out no worries and Ben Melham stays on to help get him home from barrier 7 (into 4).
