Angelic Light Leads 2014 Winterbottom Stakes Odds

Robbie Griffith’s Cranbourne-based mare Angelic Light is dominating the futures Winterbottom Stakes 2014 odds for Saturday week’s Perth clash following her strong form in Melbourne this spring.

The five-year-old daughter of Holy Roman Emperor is one of an original 53 early entries taken for this year’s $750,000 Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), the Perth Summer Racing Carnival sprint to run on November 22 at Ascot Racecourse on Railway Stakes Day.

Leading the Ladbrokes.com.au markets on the weight-for-age showdown at $3.80, Angelic Light will head to WA on the back of four Moonee Valley runs this campaign.

All four of those she’s run top four in, including her Group 2 Mitty’s McEwen Stakes (1000m) victory over Australian Horse of the Year Lankan Rupee back in September.

Her latest two runs were then both at Group 1 level when under a length away fourth to last year’s Winterbottom Stakes winner Buffering in the Moir Stakes and then a nose away second to Lankan Rupee on October 24 after suffering interference in the Manikato Stakes.

Luckless last time out, and unlucky too not to have the protest go her way, Angelic Light gets the chance to atone and to secure her maiden Group 1 title in the Winterbottom Stakes.

Futures Winterbottom Stakes betting markets then feature three other single figure chances with:

  • Moment Of Change ($6) – Peter Moody-trained weight-for-age champion was runner-up in the Winterbottom 12 months ago and looking to go one better this season. The now six-year-old Barley A Moment gelding is a multiple Group 1 winner but his form this time in has been hit and miss including a Manikato eighth and last Saturday’s fifth to Terravista in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington.
  • Barakey ($8) – Jim Taylor-trained seven-year-old local hero is a doubtful runner having suffered a virus setback and working flat last weekend. Won the Listed Goodwood Sprint (1300m) back in August and was brave in defeat when beaten three-quarters of a length by Elite Belle in the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) last start but even if he runs, fitness is the worry with all the missed work.
  • Magnifisio ($8) – Stable mate of Barakey, Taylor’s best hope then could be in this Magnus mare who won the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) in a close finish with Fuchisa Bandana last weekend. Also won the Northam Toyota Stakes – Roma Cup double during May and is a dual winner at this track and distance.

Following those under $10 are then a host of other livewire chances including Gai Waterhouse’s Sydney raider Driefontein out to atone for her 10th in the Darley Classic on Emirates Stakes Day and the Grant Williams-trained Blackfriars gelding Shining Knight coming off a Group 3 Coloney Reeves Stakes (1100m) win from November 4 – both at $11.

The next best in betting are then Jason Warren’s former Group 1 winner and recent Group 2 Caulfield Sprint champ Bel Sprinter ($13), Phillip Stokes’ Adelaide galloper Éclair Big Bang ($15) who won at Flemington last weekend, Prince Of Wales Stakes winner Elite Belle ($17) who is more likely to run in the $1 million Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at the same meeting, Moody’s returning Husson mare Peron ($17) and the John O’Shea-trained Royal Sovereign Stakes winner from the autumn Sidestep ($17).
