Dear Demi Confirmed for Victoria Derby Day Run

After a throat infection ruled Clarry Conners’ classy mare Dear Demi out of the ‘Big 3’ Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival majors the stable has confirmed she will be back for a shot at either the Myer Classic or Mackinnon Stakes on Victoria Derby Day next month.

Third behind Fawkner in last year’s Caulfield Cup the talented daughter of Dehere was set to contest the race for the second year on the back of a seventh to the reigning champ in the Caulfield Stakes beaten only four lengths.

Dear Demi was however one of four horses scratched from last weekend’s Caulfield Cup field with an inflamed throat putting an end to her bid in the staying showdown.

There was a chance then that the 2012 Crown Oaks winner would instead run in this weekend’s $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley where the Robert Hickmott-trained Fawkner is the easing favourite.

Conners on Monday though put an end to any thoughts of a Cox Plate run despite the $2.14 million earner having overcome her throat infection.

“She was scoped this morning and has been given the all-clear,” Conners told the Herald Sun at the start of the week.

“But we won’t go to the Cox Plate.

“Instead we may tackle the Myer Classic on Derby Day or the Mackinnon Stakes on the same day.

“She suddenly was coughing, had an inflamed throat and a bit of mucus (last week).

“But today you wouldn’t know there was ever anything wrong with her.

“She will miss the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate and she is not in the Melbourne Cup, but there are a couple of really nice races still there for Singo (owner John Singleton) to enjoy during the carnival.”

Dear Demi ran second to Side Glance in the $1 million Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) before her Melbourne Cup flop (19th) last year but has never made an appearance in the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on November 1.

She will be nominated for both Derby Day features and if she runs in the Mackinnon again will be looking to become the first mare since La Bella Dama (2011) to win.

Following her run on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival Conners then plans to back his stable star up seven days later at Flemington again on Emirates Stakes Day, November 8, in the $300,000 Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m).
