This Thursday the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival action moves to Newcastle Racecourse with the Newcastle Cup 2014 taking centre stage with a 15-horse field.

Running as Race 7 at 4:40pm on the second day of the two meeting Newcastle Cup Carnival this year’s field for the $175,000 Group 3 XXXX Gold Newcastle Cup (2300m) is led by two gallopers.

Battling for favouritism in the Newcastle Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are Multilateral ($4.40) and Wish Come True ($5.50) drawn in barriers seven and 15 respectively.

The Chris Waller-trained Multilateral is after back-to-back Cup wins after the Mizzen Mast gelding beat home a good field on Friday September 5 in the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m).

Ridden by James McDonald on 54kg that day, this week the stayer goes up two kilos to 56kg with Jim Cassidy taking over.

Second pick in the markets, Wish Come True has a kilo more with 57kg and the outside barrier to overcome with Blake Shinn in the saddle.

Prepared by Peter Moody the Aussie Rules gelding was runner-up in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) in Brisbane during the winter before returning for a credible fourth behind the Gai Waterhouse-trained import Greatwood in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) on August 30.

The step up to 2300m should suit here then with Wish Come True shooting for his first win over further than 2100m.

There is then just one other runner under double figures in the Newcastle Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au with Canny Ballad paying $8.

Drawn in gate 11 with Kathy O’Hara to ride, Joe Pride’s Dream Ballad gelding was runner-up to Multilateral in the Wyong Cup beaten under half a length.

He was also on the 54kg minimum along with the winner that day and rises only one kilo up to 55kg so meets Waller’s galloper better in the weights for the rematch here.

It’s then a tight battle between a host of other better priced stayers with claims.

The early Newcastle Cup market mover in from $11 to $10 is Secessio who also comes via a Wyong Cup run, the form of which the bookies rate for this week’s clash.

Also prepared by Waller, Wyong Cup third placegetter Secessio was beaten two lengths by their stable mate last time out and will appreciate the extra meters here having won the Listed Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill in June before a second to Queenstown in the Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) one run later.

Following the widely drawn Secessio (barrier 14) are then Pride’s other runner Destiny’s Kiss ($11) coming off a sixth at Wyong who carries the 59kg top weight from the inside alley and the Kris Lees-trained Oriental Lady ($13) who has previously won over this track and distance.

Four horses are then installed at $15 looking for an upset Newcastle Cup result with Travolta carrying the 58.5kg second top weight for Gai Waterhouse with Tommy Berry riding, Waller’s other runner Brigantin in barrier two, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Wyong Cup fifth placegetter Disclaimer and Ay No Digas.
