Magnifisio Heads 2014 Beaufine Stakes Field

Perth’s Belmont Winter Racing Carnival continues this Saturday with the Beaufine Stakes 2014 where Roma Cup winner Magnifisio will shoot for her sixth straight win.

There are 10 final acceptors for this year’s $100,000 Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m) including the 58.5kg top weight and one to beat Magnifisio.

Jim Taylor’s ultra-consistent Magnus mare hasn’t been beaten since November last year having dominated both her summer campaign at Ascot and her two winter runs this time in.

Her past four victories have all been black-type wins most recently at Belmont Park in the Group 3 Roma Cup (1200m) on May 17.

She did it that day from the outside barrier (12) with 56.5kg and has had a sharpen-up with a winning Lark Hill trial late last month.

Saturday sees Magnifisio carry a hefty weight giving 4.5kg to all of her rivals but she’s drawn well in barrier three with Jason Brown retaining the ride.

Also in top form and out for an upset in the Beaufine is Grant Williams’ More Than Ready mare Celebrity Miss.

The five-year-old has suffered an early blow with the outside barrier 10 draw but has earned a shot after back-to-back wins at the track and distance over the past month.

Celebrity Miss does drop back from 57.5kg last start to the 54kg minimum here and will have her third jockey in as many starts aboard with Brad Parnham picking up the ride.

The two other last start winners in the Beaufine this year are both first-up on Saturday with the Simon Miller-trained Comfysofa (barrier seven) last seen winning over 1305m at Mount Barker in January and Ross & Clint Price’s flyer Smoko.

Due to be ridden by William Pike, who jumps off Celebrity Miss, sprint star in the making Smoko faces their toughest test to date after winning their opening five career starts.

The Snitzel four-year-old is only lightly raced then but has done it easy every time so far winning their races anywhere from 2.5 to 5 lengths.

Their first three this time last year where at Belmont Park by big margins and then during the spring they won back-to-back sprints at Ascot.

Saturday will be their first run since November 9 however and they also face stakes company for the first time so they will be out to prove they’re ready for the next level.

Smoko had their final track gallop at Bunbury yesterday and impressed Price with their work.

“He had a very good gallop this morning at Bunbury and everything is back right with him,” Price told The West Australian on Tuesday.

Also in the mix are the likes of the David Harrison-trained Pininci with the inside alley and who won at the track and distance two back along with Daniel Morton’s returning mare Soldier’s Lass who won a Listed Ascot race back in March over 1400m.

The most notable non-acceptor for the race meanwhile was Jim Taylor’s Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes winner (2012) Barakey, allocated the 62kg top weight, who missed the Roma Cup with a hoof abscess.
