Latest Cox Plate 2013 Odds – Result Not a Dundeel

Race favourite for this afternoon’s Moonee Valley major It’s A Dundeel continues to ease in the 2013 Cox Plate betting markets adding value for the punters sticking with the top fancy for Australasia’s weight-for-age championship.

Scheduled as Race 10 at 5:40pm (AEST) this afternoon’s $3 million Group 1 Sportingbet Cox Plate (2040m) is shaping up as a tight race with four obvious favourites.

Heading the Cox Plate odds at $4.50, out from $4.20 on Friday, is the Murray Baker-trained Kiwi raider It’s A Dundeel.

Of course this price is worth twice as much online at Ladbrokes.com.au who are running their incredible ‘Double The Odds’ offer on the Cox Plate, meaning right now they are paying $9 on the favourite!

The four-year-old son of High Chaparral has been top of the markets since the withdrawal of star mare Atlantic Jewel, retired and to be sent to Europe to serve as a broodmare for Coolmore, but at a drifting price.

It looks like the punters are starting to pay attention to the host of Cox Plate hoodoos It’s A Dundeel has to overcome to salute for them today.

Among them is the fact no Cox Plate winner has won off a break longer than 21 days, or from his barrier 12 draw.

The next two best in Cox Plate betting Puissance De Lune and Fiorente are both also easing in their prices to score an upset Cox Plate result today.

So long as the rain stays away Darren Weir’s always honest Shamardal grey Puissance De Lune is right in this, but has drifted from $4.60 to $5.50 (or $11 DTO).

It’s a similar story for the Gai Waterhouse-trained Fiorente, runner-up in last year’s Melbourne Cup in their Australian race debut, who has drifted in Cox Plate markets from $5.50 right out to $7 ($14 DTO).

Puissance De Lune and the imported Fiorente both come via the same Cox Plate lead-up having run second and fourth respectively behind Happy Trails in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 5.

While the form on that race historically has been strong, the bookies and punters are shying away from it somewhat with the winner Happy Trails paying $12 ($24 DTO).

So where is the Cox Plate money trail leading today?

The genuine Cox Plate betting market mover today is Peter Snowden’s Caulfield Guineas winner Long John.

Drawn in gate 10 with Kerrin McEvoy to ride, the Street Cry three-year-old is at $7 ($14 DTO) and firming, a short price for a horse of their age in a Cox Plate.

Over the years 19 three-year-olds have won the Cox Plate, most recently So You Think for their first in 2009.

It’s a tough race for the youngsters to win, as proven by the fact the last Caulfield Guineas winner to back up and win the Moonee Valley was Red Anchor back in 1984.
