Guelph Scares off Rivals in 2013 Tea Rose Stakes Field

A final field of just six three-year-old fillies has been accepted for in the Tea Rose Stakes 2013 this weekend with Peter Snowden’s dual Group 1 winner Guelph scaring away rivals in the Royal Randwick feature.

One of five Group races on the George Main Stakes Day program in Sydney on Saturday, this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Coolmore Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) will see Exceed And Excel filly Guelph take on a diminutive field.

She was defeated first-up however in a shock loss when going down by the narrowest of margins in the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) at Randwick a fortnight ago.

That was her first run since hitting the headlines with her Group 1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) – Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) winning double at Randwick back in April.

Guleph lost few admirers with her resuming loss however and is sure to be odds-on again as she races in the latest leg of the Princess Series of races which will culminate with the $400,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) back at Randwick on October 5.

Snowden is also using these earlier Sydney runs as lead-ups for a Melbourne trip for Guelph who is the hot $3.70 favourite for the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on Wednesday October 16.

While there’s only five other Tea Rose runners there’s class among them, the biggest threat to Guelph being $6 second favourite for the 2013 Thousand Guineas, Bound For Earth.

Drawn in gate two with Nicholas Hall to ride, the John O’Shea-trained daughter of the ill-fated Northern Meteor has a great record so far including her third to last weekend’s Golden Rose champ Zoustar in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) in Brisbane during the winter.

She returned on September 7 and was in the winners’ stall right away defeating Guelph in the Furious, an effort she’ll be out to repeat in Round 2.

O’Shea has also accepted for Romantic Moon in gate three, his Sweet Embrace Stakes winning daughter of More Than Ready coming off a Furious Stakes fifth.

The filly coming off the most imposing form meanwhile is the David Vandyke-trained Arabian Gold who vies for their fourth win on the trot here, Saturday the known mudlark’s maiden black type assignment.

Rounding out the field are then the Gai Waterhouse-trained Furious Stakes fourth placegetter Shahad with the inside alley and Paul Messara’s resuming Redoute’s Choice filly Vocalise last seen running fourth to Sandiva in the Magic Night Stakes at Rosehill in March.
