Tattersall’s Tiara Day Best Bets 2013

Today, Saturday June 22, the Group 1 action of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival comes to a close with 2013 Tattersall’s Tiara Day– our best bets of the day to help you clean out the bookies detailed below.

Peron

It’s a bumper line-up at Eagle Farm Racecourse with five of the eight scheduled races holding black type status.

Racing kicks off at 12:10pm (AEST) this afternoon with a nice little Class 6 Handicap and things go up and up from there until the last, the $175,000 Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m), wraps things up at 4:15pm (AEST).

In between there’s certainly plenty to get excited about and lots of quality runners to enjoy a bet on at bookmaker.com.au including the day’s marquee race – the $500,000 Group 1 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at 3:40pm (AEST).

The latest Tattersall’s Tiara odds have Red Tracer as the $4.60 favourite, Chris Waller’s last start Dane Ripper Stakes winner over the track and distance looking for her maiden Group 1 win after a number of close calls and her trainer’s incredible ninth elite level trophy of the season.

Other highlights on the Tattersall’s Tiara Day card not to miss include the $200,000 Group 3 Carlton Draught Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) where the field is down to just 10 runners following some early scratchings with markets clearly led by $2.50 favourite Rothera, and the $100,000 Listed Centenary Classic Mercedes Benz Open Mile (1600m).

The Open Mile field is another plagued by early withdrawals after the rainfall in Brisbane yesterday has the course proper at Eagle Farm rated a Heavy (8) as of 7:45am this morning.

With the wet track and depleted fields there’s sure to be a number of upsets at Eagle Farm today.

So to help with your bets see below for who you should back and who you should sack with our exclusive Tattersall’s Tiara Day best bets.

In The Big One – Race 7 – Tattersall’s Tiara

#16 Peron ($7)

Going for an upset in the Group 1 today and rating the progressive young Peron to step up in class and beat home this more experienced field for her fourth victory on the trot. Three year olds have a nice record in the race formerly known as the Winter Stakes, including last year with Pear Tart. Like Pear Tart Husson filly Peron is also prepared by John Thompson and has won her three starts leading up to this big assignment. She was last seen taking out the Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich by two lengths and while she’s on the short seven day back-up she looks the type to handle it, can also handle the distance and the give out of the ground so sticking with her.

Best Roughie Bet – Race 5 – Open Mile

#6 Diademe ($14)

Five current scratchings for the Open Mile have left a final field of nine and there’s four of those under double figures. But for us one underrated runner out to score an upset in this stakes showdown is Diademe. They’re out in a wider gate but in a small field over the 1600m on a rain-affected track that won’t be a problem. Murray Baker’s Savabeel mare has seen plenty of soft tracks back home in New Zealand including three back for her good third behind Xanadu in the Group 1 NZ Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes over this distance. Comes off two promising runs in Brisbane most recently finishing under one and a half lengths away fourth to Tokamak (scratched from this race) in the Listed Strawberry Road Handicap over the 1600m at Eagle Farm. Ready to improve on that here.

Better Than Bank Interest – Race 6 – Tattersall’s Cup

#2 Rothera ($2.50)

Even before the early withdrawals in this field Rothera was the Races.com.au team’s tip to win the $200,000 Group 3 Carlton Draught Tattersalls’ Cup (2200m). They are the second heaviest weighted with 57kg so do give a bit of weight away but really do look the one to beat. Had 59kg to Quintessential’s 57.5kg two back when second in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2100m) at Eagle Farm on a Heavy (9) and were far from disgraced when a month later they were fifth in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m). Drop back in class here and the 2200m will suit more than the mile and a half, wet track firmly in their favour too so lot’s to like.
