Racing history will be made this Saturday when the 2026 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) is run at Flemington Racecourse for the first time ever while Moonee Valley undergoes redevelopment. The 106th edition of Australia’s premier weight-for-age contest has attracted a star-studded field of 12 featuring proven Group 1 champions, emerging three-year-old talent, international imports and multiple Cox Plate-winning trainers chasing glory. With the official Cox Plate 2026 barrier draw adding another fascinating layer to one of the most open betting markets in years, we’ve broken down every runner’s winning hopes ahead of the $6 million showdown to help punters sort the genuine contenders from the rough hopes.

1. CEOLWULF (3)
Joseph Pride’s ultra-consistent gelding rarely runs a bad race and returns to the track where he won the Champions Mile last spring. His recent Sydney form around Autumn Glow and God’s Window reads exceptionally well, and the rise to 2000m looks ideal after strong mile performances in the King Charles III Stakes and Epsom Handicap. Drawn perfectly in barrier three, Chad Schofield should enjoy a dream run before unleashing late. If the race is run genuinely, Ceolwulf will be one of the strongest closers in the field and looms as a genuine winning chance at a great price.
| 1. Ceolwulf (3) J: Chad Schofield 59kg 52322 T: Joseph Pride | |||
| Form hard to fault. Last start 2nd in a small field in the G1 King Charles Iii Stakes at Randwick on October 17 over 1609m, slow going 2.25 len behind Autumn Glow carrying 59kg at $4.80. The race before that 2nd of 16 in the G1 Epsom Handicap at Randwick on October 3 over 1600m, on a slow track; 1.75 len behind God’s Window with 59kg at $9.50. Racing as well as ever, gets a smother and explodes late. | |||
2. LIGHT INFANTRY MAN (11)
The Australian Cup winner has been there and done it at the elite level and comes into the Cox Plate off a brave runner-up finish in the Turnbull Stakes. The wide draw isn’t ideal, but the likely leader loves rolling along in front and has proven Flemington form. Alongside stablemate Land Legend, he should ensure a genuine tempo, and if he gets into a rhythm up front, he could take plenty of catching. A tough old warhorse who will give punters a sight.
| 2. Light Infantry Man (11) J: Harry Coffey 59kg 5×482 T: Ciaron Maher | |||
| Most recently set the pace for much of the race 2nd of 13 in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at this track on October 3 over 2000m, on rain affected going; 1.75 len behind Cosmic Crusader with 58kg at $26. Before that 8th of 10 in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes at this track on September 12 over 1600m, 5.5 len behind Sheza Alibi with 59kg at $41. Loves Flemington, was game last time, can give cheek. | |||
3. SIR DELIUS (5)
The horse they all have to beat of the Cox Plate betting markets at Ladbrokes are anything to go by. Sir Delius has been set specifically for the Cox Plate all preparation and his two lead-up fourths have been exactly what connections would have wanted. His Queen Elizabeth Stakes win in autumn remains arguably the best single piece of form in the field, and he gets conditions to suit third-up on dry ground from the coveted barrier five. Craig Williams should enjoy the run of the race stalking the speed, and if Sir Delius reproduces his peak, he looks every bit a deserving favourite.
| 3. Sir Delius (5) J: Craig Williams 59kg 31×44 T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | |||
| Third-up today and won third-up in the past. First-up 4th of 10 in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes at this track on September 12 over 1600m, 4 len behind Sheza Alibi with 59kg at $5. Second run from a spell 4th of 13 in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at this track on October 3 over 2000m, on a wet track; 3.5 len behind Cosmic Crusader with 59kg at $3. Been set for this, set up is perfect, best horse in the race if he brings it. | |||
4. ATTRITION (4)
Potentially one of the more overlooked runners in the race despite arriving off a confidence-boosting Group 2 Hill Stakes victory. He was also a solid third behind Birdman in the Underwood earlier this campaign and benefits from a soft draw in barrier four. The concern is whether he possesses the class and acceleration of the market leaders, but if the race turns into a grinding staying test, he’s capable of exceeding market expectations.
| 4. Attrition (4) J: Jamie Mott 59kg x9031 T: Mitchell Freedman | |||
| At the latest run won by a neck in the G2 Hill Stakes at Rosehill on October 10 over 1900m defeating Lindermann with 59kg at $6. Before that raced on the pace when 3rd of 8 in the G1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield on September 19 over 1800m, 4 len behind Birdman with 59kg at $101. Rock solid, good win last time, doubt he quite has the class. | |||
5. COSMIC CRUSADER (8)
The Turnbull Stakes winner continues to improve and wasn’t disgraced when finishing a close fourth in the Caulfield Cup last weekend. His Turnbull victory at Flemington over 2000m is a massive tick for this assignment and suggests he can handle the unique conditions of this year’s Cox Plate. William Pike takes the ride and if the quick back-up doesn’t flatten him, Cosmic Crusader has the form to be right in the finish again.
| 5. Cosmic Crusader (8) J: William Pike 59kg 13214 T: Andrea Leek | |||
| Most recently 4th of 18 in the G1 Caulfield Cup on October 17 over 2400m, 1.4 len behind Kingswood with 56kg at $4.80. The start before that favourite; won by 1.75 len in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at this track on October 3 over 2000m on a heavy track defeating Light Infantry Man with 58kg at $8. Not far away last start. Iron horse, the Turnbull win says he can win and he’ll be fitter than anything. | |||
6. BIRDMAN (1)
The forgotten horse of the race and perhaps the best value in the market. Birdman was devastating winning the Underwood Stakes before a tough third behind Land Legend in the Might And Power. Now he gets every conceivable favour from barrier one with Ben Melham likely to settle just behind the speed and save ground throughout. Chris Waller knows how to prepare a Cox Plate winner, and if Birdman recaptures his Underwood form, he can absolutely feature in the finish.
| 6. Birdman (1) J: Ben Melham 59kg 1×613 T: Chris Waller | |||
| Form hard to fault. At the latest run 3rd in a small field in the G1 Might And Power Stakes at Caulfield on October 10 over 2000m, 1.4 len behind Land Legend carrying 59kg at $4.40. The run before that won by 1.75 len in the G1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield on September 19 over 1800m defeating Cosmic Crusader carrying 59kg at $6. Like the draw, can improve again and the Underwood win was dominant. | |||
7. LAND LEGEND (12)
The most intriguing runner in the field after causing a massive upset in the Might And Power Stakes at track-record pace. Connections stunned punters by selecting barrier 12 at the unique barrier draw, signalling their intent to roll forward and take luck out of the equation. The outside draw has not produced a Cox Plate winner in more than 25 years, but Flemington’s spacious layout may lessen that disadvantage. If he’s allowed to dictate terms again, another shock result isn’t out of the question.
| 7. Land Legend (12) J: Ethan Brown 59kg 9×001 T: Ciaron Maher | |||
| At the latest run won by a head in the G1 Might And Power Stakes at Caulfield on October 10 over 2000m defeating Sheza Alibi carrying 59kg at $61. Before that 11th of 13 in the G3 Jra Cup at Caulfield on September 27 over 2000m, 9 len behind Royal Supremacy with 56.5kg at $12. Shock winner in track record time latest, not sure they’ll let him pinch this one. | |||
8. MIDDLE EARTH (7)
The rank outsider of the field and likely looking for longer distances this spring. His Caulfield Cup and Turnbull efforts suggest this level may be a stretch, although he does draw one of the historically strongest Cox Plate barriers. John Allen knows what it takes to win this race after partnering State Of Rest to victory in 2021, but Middle Earth would need one of the biggest boilovers in recent Cox Plate history.
| 8. Middle Earth (7) J: John Allen 59kg x8789 T: Ciaron Maher | |||
| Most recently 9th of 18 in the G1 Caulfield Cup on October 17 over 2400m, 5.5 len behind Kingswood with 55kg at $61. The start before that 8th of 13 in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at this track on October 3 over 2000m, on a wet track; 10 len behind Cosmic Crusader carrying 56kg at $31. Outclassed, better suited next week in the Cup. | |||
9. SAINT GEORGE (6)
No horse enters off a braver run than Saint George, who was outstanding in defeat when runner-up in last week’s Caulfield Cup. The Maher-trained stayer is flying and gets blinkers applied for the first time, but the drop back to 2040m may not be ideal. Still, confidence is high in the stable and his toughness alone ensures he can’t be completely dismissed.
| 9. Saint George (6) J: Blake Shinn 59kg 11202 T: Ciaron Maher | |||
| Most recently 2nd of 18 in the G1 Caulfield Cup on October 17 over 2400m, 0.5 len behind Kingswood carrying 53.5kg at $10. The race before that eased back early on 10th of 13 in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at this track on October 3 over 2000m, on rain affected going; 11 len behind Cosmic Crusader with 55kg at $13. Doubt he’s good enough. | |||
10. AELIANA (10)
Chris Waller’s headline act and the mare many punters believe can deliver him another Cox Plate trophy. Aeliana has been building beautifully this preparation, highlighted by her excellent Turnbull Stakes third behind Cosmic Crusader at Flemington. James McDonald, who has won the past four Cox Plates, takes the ride and will likely allow her to settle before unleashing her trademark finish. The wide draw adds some complexity, but her class is undeniable and she remains one of the major winning hopes.
| 10. Aeliana (10) J: James McDonald 57kg 1×023 T: Chris Waller | |||
| Racing well recently. Last start 3rd of 13 in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at this track on October 3 over 2000m, on a wet track; 2.75 len behind Cosmic Crusader with 57kg at $3.80. The start before that 2nd in a small field in the G2 7 Stakes at Randwick on September 19 over 1600m, 1.3 len behind Autumn Glow carrying 57kg at $21. Building beautifully, will be charging home. | |||
11. WARWOVEN (2)
The exciting three-year-old attempting to become the first locally trained colt to win the Cox Plate in over a decade. His Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas victories have been exceptional, and he gets into this race carrying just 49.5kg under the weight-for-age scale. Barrier two gives Rachel King the perfect opportunity to settle close enough without doing any work. The question is whether he can match motors with seasoned WFA performers at 2040m, but if he’s as good as many think he is, this could be his crowning moment.
| 11. Warwoven (2) J: Rachel King 49.5kg x5111 T: Bjorn Baker | |||
| Form hard to fault. Most recently favourite; came from midfield and won by 1.75 len in the G1 Caulfield Guineas on October 10 over 1600m defeating Blind Raise with 57kg at $2.40. The run before that favourite; won by 3 len in the G1 Golden Rose Stakes at Rosehill on September 26 over 1400m defeating St Gotthard with 56.5kg at $6. Very talented 3yo, draws perfectly, this is the acid test. | |||
12. BLIND RAISE (9)
Don’t underestimate this tough three-year-old. Blind Raise wasn’t suited by the race shape in the Caulfield Guineas yet still stuck on strongly to finish runner-up behind Warwoven after winning the Guineas Prelude impressively. Jamie Melham has spoken glowingly about his chances and believes his latest run was enormous. He maps to get a nice trail from barrier nine and receives the same luxury weight as Warwoven. At double-figure odds, he’s one of the more appealing knockout hopes in the race.
| 12. Blind Raise (9) J: Jamie Melham 49.5kg 9×112 T: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young | |||
| Racing well recently. Last start held ground to the line 2nd of 11 in the G1 Caulfield Guineas on October 10 over 1600m, 1.75 len behind Warwoven carrying 57kg at $3.10. The start before that tracked the speed and boxed on steadily; won by 2.75 len in the G3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude on September 19 over 1400m defeating Tornado Valley with 57kg at $2.40. Very brave in the Guineas, wouldn’t surprise if he measured right up. | |||
Verdict: Who Wins The Cox Plate 2026?

Sir Delius gets the perfect setup and remains the horse to beat from barrier five, while Aeliana, Warwoven, Ceolwulf and Birdman all bring elite-level form lines and look capable of lifting the trophy on Saturday.
