Over 100 hopeful three-year-olds have been entered for one of Melbourne’s premier spring mile races with the Caulfield Guineas 2026 nominations closing on Tuesday.

Ace horseman Chris Waller will chase a sixth win in this year’s Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 10 and spearheads the early entries with a bumper crop of 18 three-year-old mile types.

Waller has prepared the past two Caulfield Guineas winners with Private Life (2024) and Autumn Boy (2025) and currently has the all-in favourite, Tron Bolt ($5), at Ladbrokes.
The class colt won three straight last prep including an impressive Group 1 JJ Atkins triumph over 1600m in Brisbane at his latest which has him sitting narrowly atop the Caulfield Guineas betting markets to add another elite level mile feature to his CV.
Not only does Waller have the current top fancy, but his contingent dominates the pre-field markets with St Gotthard ($6) and untapped Frankel colt Central Europe ($7) the other single figure chances at time of publish.
Snitzel colt St Gotthard is undefeated ahead of his spring return, which is expected to be in Sydney’s Group 2 Run to the Rose this weekend, having won his opening two career runs.
At his latest he was emphatic putting nearly four lengths on the next best over the line in the Group 3 Ken Russell at the Gold Coast back in May, and the team are expecting big things for the progressive youngster this campaign.
Central Europe meanwhile is a three-time Black-Type placegetter including a run fresh for third in the Listed The Rosebud with his maiden status sure to be broken in the coming weeks.
Among the other standout Waller-trained Caulfield Guineas 2026 nominees include Group 1 Inglis Sires’ champ Campione D’Italia ($15) and Wootton Bassett colt Stormy Marco ($13) who ran third in the JJ Atkins.
American Eagle ($10) is another top entry being kept safe in the markets with the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Too Darn Hot having saluted narrowly first-up in the Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes at the Caulfield track.
“It’s the time of year that you’re hoping to have horses like these, particularly colts go to these sorts of races,” co-trainer Sam Freedman told the media after that August 29 victory.
“Anthony had a good opinion of this horse very early days up in Sydney, that’s been vindicated, the horse has come down here and shown class at home.
“He looks the real deal so hopefully he’ll keep getting better.”
First-up Listed McKenzie Stakes winning Ace High gelding Blind Raise ($11), Phillip & Tommy Stokes‘ VOBIS Showdown winner from the autumn Big Wigs ($15), Maurice colt Cormier ($15) who was second in the JJ Atkins, recent Up & Coming Stakes second placegetter Genesis Runner ($15) and reigning Golden Slipper hero Guest House ($17) who saluted fresh in the Group 3 San Domenico are also highly regarded for a Caulfield Guineas bid.
There are three fillies featured in the entries for a potential run against the boys: Regal Ambition, Portinari and Aethera.
Surround (1976) however was the last Caulfield Guineas winning filly.
Catchy (3rd in 2017) and Oohood (3rd in 2018) meanwhile are the latest fillies to place in the Caulfield Guineas.
The 2026 Caulfield Guineas first acceptances close at midday on Tuesday September 22.
