2018 Caulfield Sprint: Eduardo Claims Group Two Glory

Make it three wins from five starts for talented galloper Eduardo.

The lightly raced five-year old claimed the Caulfield Sprint on Saturday over 1000m, showcasing tremendous speed down the straight to finish just one second off the overall race record.

Running in a time of 58.43, Eduardo sat three deep early to explode down the middle of the straight and attack the line strongly. The son of Host always looked up for the challenge with several horses flying home late, but it was Eduardo who claimed a maiden Group 2 win by three-quarters of a length.

“It worked out really good, there was good pace and he had to travel three-wide to cover and he come (sic) around them and he put himself there so easy,” jockey Brian Park said after the race.

“I thought we might as well push the button a little bit after straightening, and with a lot of weight on his back, it worked out really good.”

Eduardo carried 58.5kg, but still managed to run the fastest final split of the race.

Trainer, and Park’s girlfriend, Sarah Zschoke, was elated with the win.

“I can believe it, but I can’t believe it” she said.

“I thought the horse was up to it because of his previous and upcoming runs that he’s had, and he’s just a really suitable horse. I like the way he switched off during the run and Brian was able to give him that, and it was just brilliant, I’m really so happy.”

In the past, Caulfield Sprint winners like Rubitano (2002) and River Rough (1984) went on to win the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) three weeks later on November 10.

The Group 2 Linlithgow Stakes (1200m) on November 3 might also be an option, although the stable is still unsure on what path they’ll place Eduardo on.

“Don’t know what we’re doing with him yet, but see how he pulls up and take it from there” Park said after Saturday’s win.

Bons Away, who is nominated for the Darley Classic, ran third.
