2010 Winterbottom Stakes Odds – Orentsia Early Favourite
Tony Noonan’s smart mare Ortensia has opened as the punters’ favourite in the 2010 Winterbottom Stakes odds, the defending champ out to make it back-to-back wins in the Perth Summer Racing Carnival feature on Saturday November 27.
Testa Rossa five-year-old Ortensia scored a tidy victory in the Group 2 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) last year and is the current $4.00 favourite through Luxbet to take out the $750,000 feature again this Ascot Festival.
Twenty-seven horses are still vying for a spot in the Winterbottom Stakes final field, with the close second favourite in the early odds being Waratah’s Secret.
The David Harrison-trained four-year-old is paying $4.20 through Luxbet to win the Winterbottom Stakes, Waratah’s Secret in red hot form this season having won the Prince of Wales Stakes (1200m) here on October 23 before running a gallant second in the Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) last start.
Five other runners heading towards the Winterbottom Stakes are at single figure odds to win with Whitefriars ($7), Fred Kersley’s local eight-year-old gelding Marasco ($7.50), the Mick Price-trained Bel Esprit four-year-old True Persuasion ($8), Prince of Wales Stakes and Lee Steere Stakes third placegetter For Your Eyes Only ($9) and last year’s Winterbottom Stakes runner-up Idyllic Prince ($9) all getting their share of the punters money.
A great pick is Rick Worthington’s in-form Sydney galloper Whitefriars who has enjoyed great success this season including a brilliant second to Hot Danish in the The Shorts (1200m) at Randwick, a win in the City Lightning Stakes (1100m) and then a last start victory in the Salinger Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.
Good value entries at generous double figure odds that can cause an upset in the Winterbottom Stakes include Colonel Reeves Stakes’ winner Ma Ma Machine ($13), local Hussonet gelding Werd ($19) and veteran galloper Tarzi ($34) set to contest the Group 1 Railway Stakes this Saturday, November 20.
