Magic Millions Classic winner Sunlight Firms in Golden Slipper 2018 Odds

Futures 2018 Golden Slipper Betting for the country’s richest two-years-old race is now led by Tony McEvoy’s gun filly Sunlight following her Magic Millions 2YO Classic win at the Gold Coast over the weekend.

The brilliant young daughter of Zoustar made it three wins from four career starts when saluting for the punters as the $4 favourite in Saturday’s Restricted Listed $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m).

Making it two-from-two for the fillies following the success of Houtzen (2017) last Queensland Summer Racing Carnival, the Luke Currie-ridden Sunlight had two lengths to spare on the line from Stuart Kendrick’s Sepoy colt Fullazaboot who jumped at lucrative $101 odds.

In third rounding out this season’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic trifecta just a quarter-length fourth back was the Tony Gollan-trained Calaway Gal Stakes winning filly Outback Barbie ($26) who beat home her better fancied stablemate Ef Troop ($4.20).

Hard luck story of the interference-marred edition of the Magic Millions Classic was the David Atkins-trained Jonker who copped the brunt of the early knocks and ran dead last.

It was Ef Troop and young hoop Matthew McGillivray crossing from his wide alley that caused the roughhousing, but eventual winning hoop Currie kept his cool even when Sunlight suffered interference.

“Luke could see what was going to happen but full credit to him, he got up there and held his spot, although he could see what was going to happen. If he didn’t do that she wouldn’t have won,” McEvoy told the Herald Sun.

Last year the Toby Edmonds-trained Houtzen went on to run fifth in a muddy edition of the Group 1 $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m).

This autumn’s edition of the autumn classic takes place at Rosehill Gardens on March 24 and is now firmly on the agenda for the up-and-coming Sunlight.

“She’s a high-class filly and hasn’t put a foot wrong,” McEvoy said.

“She’s had such a blessed preparation I feel like a local.

“We’re going to the Golden Slipper now and she’s Slipper quality.

“I’ve got 10 weeks to get her there.

“I’ll train her from Sydney but before that she’ll have a short break on a farm near there.”

After her dominant performance on the weekend, Sunlight has shot to the top of all-in Golden Slipper Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $7 for the win.

She now sits ahead of former favourite Performer ($8) from the Chris Waller stables and is out to do the Magic Millions Classic – Golden Slipper double last completed by Capitalist (2016).

It was a typically hot and humid day at the Gold Coast for the $10 million Magic Millions Race meeting and McEvoy believes bringing Sunlight to Queensland early helped her acclimatise ahead of the $2 million showdown.

“We don’t get the humidity like this back home that’s why I sent her here early to get used to the conditions,” he said.

“It’s a hard race to win for interstate horses.”
