Melbourne Cup 2017 Jockeys: Bayliss Off Ventura Storm

Progressive hoop Regan Bayliss misses the chance to ride in his maiden Melbourne Cup field losing the mount on Ventura Storm due to a careless riding suspension handed down on Wednesday.

Bayliss copped a seven-meeting ban for his ride in the last on Bendigo Cup Day aboard Saddle The Sun after he shifted out the Lindsay Park-trained winner, interfering with the run of the eventual fourth placed beaten favourite Got The Moves.

The 20-year-old was confirmed to ride another Lindsay Park galloper, five-year-old Zoffany entire Ventura Storm in the iconic Group 1 $6.25 million Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) next Tuesday.

Bayliss was aboard the stayer for three starts earlier this season including the second to super mare Winx in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m).

Damien Oliver, also serving a lengthy suspension missing his chance of making history with a record-equalling fourth Melbourne Cup win, was on Ventura Storm last start for a disappointing 13th in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).

Three-time Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss of Makybe Diva fame has subsequently been confirmed to replace Bayliss, who returns on Emirates Stakes Day (November 11), on Ventura Storm.

Stablemate Boom Time scored the shock Caulfield Cup win, the David Hayes-owned six-year-old now chasing the Spring Cups double backing-up over the two miles in the Melbourne Cup 2017.

The Flying Spur stallion had Cory Parish riding him to victory on the 52kg lightweight in the Caulfield Cup at a blowout price and Parish retains the ride in the big one going up to 53kg.

The latest all-in Melbourne Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have the defending champion Almandin at the top of betting paying $6.50.

Oliver was originally to ride the Lloyd Williams-owned galloper, but globetrotting Italian hoop Frankie Dettori has now picked up the ride.

Boom Time and Ventura Storm are both listed at $34 in futures Melbourne Cup betting ahead of the release of the final field on Saturday afternoon.

Hayes confirmed both horses had trained on well from the Caulfield Cup and that Ventura Storm’s unplaced run could be explained by a hoof abscess.

“Boom Time and Ventura Storm have done that well if the old Mackinnon Stakes was being on Saturday, I’d be running both horses,” he told The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday.

“Ventura Storm’s had a hoof abscess after the Caulfield Cup, we were happy to find an excuse for him as we know he is a class stayer.

“He had a couple of lame days but we put different shoes on him and he has responded well. He has come right now and his work at Lindsay Park has been really good.”

The Hayes-led Lindsay Park operation could saddle-up a third chance in the 2017 Melbourne Cup field with Harlem looking to sneak into the 24 starter line-up via Saturday’s Group 3 $300,000 Lexus Stakes (2500m).

Also paying $34 to win the ‘Race That Stops A Nation’, Champs Elysees six-year-old Harlem was last seen finishing eighth in the Caulfield Cup and has Dwayne Dunn riding this weekend.

Dunn won’t retain the ride on Melbourne Cup Day however, the jockey already booked to ride the Chris Waller-trained Libran.
