Queensland Derby 2017 Tips & Odds Update

The 2017 Queensland Derby runs over a shorter distance at Doomben than is tradition on the weekend and below are our  insider betting tips plus the latest odds on the three-years-old winter showdown.

Hugh Bowman

Set to run as Race 7 on the Stradbroke Handicap Day card, this season’s $600,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2200m) features a full field and the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au have Ruthven ($4.50) as the firming favourite.

Ciaron Maher’s Domesday colt has run second in four of his five lead-up runs including in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) last time out on May 13.

He gives the fitness edge to a few away, but back to 2200m this weekend from a good barrier with Hugh Bowman aboard he shapes-up as a deserving favourite.

The Kiwi in barrier one Shocking Luck has eased out to $5.50 second favouritism in the latest Queensland Derby odds, but should enjoy a firming track after running sixth in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) a fortnight back at Eagle Farm.

Earlier we published a comprehensive Queensland Derby 2017 form guide and betting preview, our insider tips on the race now published below based on the facts and stats uncovered there.

Our 2017 Queensland Derby Trifecta Tip is #2 Ruthven from #1 Volatile Mix and #4 Mongolian Wolf

1st

#2 Ruthven ($4.50)

The odds are firming on the Maher’s now favourite and he’s got the form to suggest the money trail is worth following. A perennial placegetter, this young stayer hasn’t won since his back-to-back wins when kicking off his career last spring. He’s been thereabouts ever since however including the close ATC Derby fourth and second in the SA Derby when only a half-length beaten by Volatile Mix over 2500m. Think with the little break between runs the 2200m will suit and he’s drawn to win. Hasn’t had a Brisbane lead-up, but it was only two years ago Magicool came straight off a SA Derby fourth to win the Queensland Derby at Doomben. Three favourites have won in the past six years and if Ruthven can shake off that fear of being first not second past the post, he’ll be winning.

2nd

#1 Volatile Mix ($7)

One-time favourite, Volatile Mix has eased out due to his wide barrier draw. Even dropped back from 2400m to 2200m to accommodate the change of distance, there’s enough time for this Darren Weir-trained SA Derby champion to get into a winning position. He would have been better suited to the mile and a half at Eagle Farm, but is fit after a devastatingly close Grand Prix second (also from out wide) and a subsequent Sunshine Coast trial. He’s a class stayer and just needs luck from the gate to salute in the interstate Derby double.

3rd

#4 Mongolian Wolf ($13)

Weir has three in the mix and confirmed Mongolian Wolf after a good Tuesday gallop. Won Randwick’s Group 3 Frank Packer Plate in mid-April before an 11th over 2000m at Caulfield last time out. Unconventional lead-up, but is four-from-ten career wise. Kiwi import who will enjoy the 2200m third-up, ready to peak and is in with a shot.
