Kingsford-Smith Cup 2017 Betting Update: Counterattack Market Mover

Chris Waller’s last start Doomben 10,000 runner-up Counterattack has been the best backed horse early in 2017 Kingsford-Smith Cup betting markets for this afternoon’s Group 1 feature in Brisbane.

A field of 13 will take to the track in Eagle Farm Race 7 for the revamped edition of the $700,000 Group 1 Darley Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m).

Current favourite in Kingsford-Smith Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Darren Weir-trained Black Heart Bart who has eased out slightly from $3.40 to $3.70 to post his seventh Group 1 success.

The class sprinter is on a short seven day turnaround after a disappointing seventh in Adelaide’s Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) last weekend, but with the blinkers on today could still be the horse to beat.

Firming right into second favouritism from $8 to $5 is then Waller’s in-form Redoute’s Choice stallion Counterattack.

The gun four-year-old hasn’t won a race since the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) at this same meeting – then held at Doomben – last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

He’s been right in the mix and narrowly beaten on a number of occasions since however including his last start second when only a half-length off Redzel in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) a fortnight back.

With winning form up to 1350m, the extra distance of today’s feature race should suit and Counterattack looks set to peak.

Eagle Farm Racecourse is also currently racing as a Heavy (8) and Waller’s runner has outstanding form in the wet making him one of the most likely to get through the going in the Kingsford-Smith Cup.

There’s also been a huge move on last Saturday’s Group 3 BRC Sprint winner over 1350m at Doomben, Jungle Edge, who opened at $11 but has been smashed by the punters into $6.50.

Mick Bell’s autumn revelation has thrived on Heavy-rated tracks all preparation racking up two Group 1 thirds and two Group 3 wins to take his career earnings up over half-a-million.

The six-year-old is flying and gets the right conditions to be very competitive once again as he sees Eagle Farm for the first time.

The last of the single figure fancies at $6 is the Lindsay Park-trained three-year-old Derryn ($7 into $6) drawn gate four with Mark Zahra riding.

If the Doomben 10,000 form stacks up at Eagle Farm today, this Hinchinbrook colt could be the one to get behind after his third in the lead-up.

The big drifter meanwhile is the Kris Lees-trained Clearly Innocent.

Earlier in the week the last start Scone winner was at $6.50 to post back-to-back wins and retain his undefeated status at the distance.

The punters have shied away from Hugh Bowman’s mount however, the Not A Single Doubt gelding right out to $10 in the markets for his first Group 1 assignment.
