Burning Front Tops 2017 RA Lee Stakes Field & Betting

Darren Weir’s ultra-consistent Victorian visitor Burning Front is clear favourite in RA Lee Stakes 2017 betting to dominate a diminutive field of milers at Morphettville Racecourse on The Goodwood Day this weekend.

Set to run as Morphettville Race 6 at 3:45pm (ACST), this Saturday’s $250,000 Group 3 Hughes Limousines RA Lee Stakes (1600m) has attracted just the 10 starters.

Sitting top of the field and having won six of his past seven starts is Weir’s Primus six-year-old Burning Front who sits top of the RA Lee Stakes odds paying $2.40 through Ladbrokes.com.au.

Brad Rawiller rides the galloper on the weekend with the horse returning to Adelaide for the first time since his Listed CS Hayes (1600m) win at the same track and distance as the odds-on favourite in mid-March.

After a Golden Mile fourth at Bendigo after that when carting 60.5kg and only being beaten 1.35 lengths by the winner Observational, Burning Front returned to winning form last time out in the VOBIS Gold Mile at Caulfield on April 22.

He has killer form over the distance (13-6-2-2) and gets in well in the weights with 57.5kg making him a tough favourite to knock.

Early market mover in RA Lee Stakes betting for Saturday is Hooked ($3.70 into $3.30) jumping from barrier three with Luke Nolen to ride the Robert Smerdon-trained stallion.

A six-year-old son of Casino Prince, Hooked has his first Morphettville run on the weekend after a last start Group 3 win over 1400m at Caulfield in mid-April.

He has since enjoyed a runaway eight length trial victory at Cranbourne on May 8, but has won just one of his 10 previous starts over the 1600m.

Also under $10 for the win are Rhythm To Spare ($6.50) and Royal Rumble ($8.50), both also coming off a lead-up win.

Mark Zahra rides the Michael Moroney-trained Pins seven-year-old Rhythm To Spare whose lead-up run produced a smart three and a quarter-length victory over the 1600m at Caulfield on April 29.

That was his seventh win over the distance he is back over on Saturday and coming down from 58.5kg to 55.5kg is another big plus for the Victorian raider.

Royal Rumble meanwhile is out to extend a winning streak to four straight on Saturday from gate seven with Clare Lindop in the saddle of the local galloper.

Prepared by Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas, in-form New Approach four-year-old Royal Rumble was last seen saluting at the track and distance on May 6.

He has posted three wins and a third from four previous runs over the Morphettville Mile and is deserving at a shot against tougher company on the weekend.
