True Rebel has announced himself as the horse to beat in next Saturday’s Group 1 $3 million Victoria Derby (2500m) after a polished victory in the 2026 Moonee Valley Vase results at Flemington on Cox Plate Day.

The progressive Danny O’Brien-trained gelding continued his rapid rise through the ranks when proving too strong for his rivals in the traditional Victoria Derby lead-up, defeating Skua by half a length with Salann further back in third.

The performance was enough to convince punters and bookmakers alike, with True Rebel immediately firming from $6 into outright $4.50 favouritism in futures Victoria Derby betting at Ladbrokes as he attempts to join Observer (2025) as the only as the only other 3YO to complete the coveted Moonee Valley Vase-Victoria Derby double since Efficient (2006).

True Rebel Delivers in Derby Dress Rehearsal

Starting a well-supported $2.60 favourite, True Rebel justified the hype with a professional display under Blake Shinn, travelling strongly throughout before proving superior in the concluding stages of the 2040m contest.

  3. #10 Salann

The victory was the second win from just four starts for the son of Rebel Dane, whose form continues to improve with every run as he steps up in distance.

Early money is now coming for True Rebel to emulate Observer (2025) and complete the Vase - VRC Derby double!

O’Brien Eyeing Derby Glory

Trainer Danny O’Brien was pleased with the way True Rebel handled his first test at 2000 metres and indicated the seven-day turnaround into the Victoria Derby could work in the gelding’s favour.

“It was genuinely enough run so he didn’t really have to see it out,” he told Racing Victoria.

“He always seemed to travel as well as anything in the race and was probably the last horse off the bridle and kept finding the line.”

While True Rebel’s staying prowess may not be obvious on paper, O’Brien believes everything about the horse suggests he can continue to improve as the distances increase.

“Physically he looks like a stayer but on pedigree he doesn’t,” he added.

“He’s a very relaxed customer and all of his races say he wants further and he got out to the 2000 today and stayed well.”

“It is another step to go further but all of the horses next Saturday are in the same boat.”

Importantly, O’Brien believes Saturday’s race has set the gelding up perfectly for the Derby assignment.

“He won’t have to do much,” he confirmed.

“The best way I find to take horses to the 2500 for the first time is probably a solid 2000 and even the seven days is an advantage too.”

Shinn: “He’s Announced Himself Today”

Leading jockey Blake Shinn was equally impressed with the performance, declaring True Rebel had now firmly entered the Victoria Derby conversation.

“He’s announced himself today,” Shinn said.

“He’s made a good step to 2000 metres.”

Shinn praised the gelding’s straightforward racing style and the skill of his trainer in identifying Derby prospects.

“He’s just a no fuss horse,” he explained.

“He’s got a great physical frame, he’s by Rebel Dane, a sprinting sort of horse.”

“Danny’s a great judge of a horse. He identifies these style of horses.”

“A little bit left field and this is another one.”

The star hoop believes True Rebel’s attitude has been a major factor behind his rapid progression.

“His attitude has carried him to 2000,” Shinn said.

“He may be better at a mile or 1800 but class got him through today.”

Derby Decision Already Made?

While Shinn stopped short of declaring True Rebel a certainty to see out the Victoria Derby’s testing 2500m journey, he suggested the gelding has every right to take his place in next Saturday’s feature.

“You’ve got the Derby at the doorstep next week. It is going to be really tempting, and Danny is a master at making these right calls,” he said.

Shinn believes race shape could prove crucial if True Rebel lines up.

“It’s a Derby there for anyone’s keeping,” he added.

“It is a wide open race and the horse is fit and well.”

“If you get a sit-and-sprint type of Derby, it’ll play into his hands but if you get a staying test, I’ve got reservations.”

Still, the jockey acknowledged that O’Brien now faces the type of problem every trainer wants.

“It’ll be up to the boss to get the job done for Danny and he’s got a quality problem to stew over for the next few days,” he said.

Victoria Derby Favourite Emerges

The Vase has long been one of the premier form references for the Victoria Derby and True Rebel’s victory now stamps him as the young stayer to beat.

Having progressed from a Geelong maiden winner to Group 2 success in just four career starts, he still possesses plenty of upside, while his relaxed racing style and ability to settle make him a genuine Derby prospect.

The market certainly agrees.

Following Saturday’s success, True Rebel has tightened into $4.50 favouritism for the 2026 Victoria Derby.

For now, the message from Flemington is clear, True Rebel truly is the Victoria Derby horse to beat.
