Chris Waller’s multiple Group 1 winning mare Joliestar will kick off her spring campaign in the 2025 Sheraco Stakes this weekend in Sydney as the firm favourite to improve on her close finish in the same event last season.

One of the key support acts on Saturday’s Run To The Rose Day card, this year’s Group 2 $300,000 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) has drawn a small but elite field of class female gallopers with may eyeing tougher targets over the coming weeks.
Sitting top of the latest Sheraco Stakes odds through Ladbrokes.com.au in the nine-starter field is Joliestar who ran third to Sunshine In Paris 12 months ago.
Since then, the daughter of Zoustar has collected two Group 1 trophies in the Newmarket Handicap down the famous Flemington ‘Straight Six’ and the Kingsford-Smith Cup over 1300m in Brisbane over the winter.
She had a nostril flare to spare on the line at Eagle Farm on June 7 but looks very well rated back against a field of her own kind fresh with a 50% winning strike rate over the 1200m to date (8:4-0-2).
Waller is already a four-time Sheraco Stakes winning trainer with his latest win being in 2020 with Haut Brion Her, and there’s plenty of money coming for his $4.5 million earner Joliestar to hand him a fifth success on Saturday.
She dominates Sheraco Stakes betting at $2.15.
The danger and early market mover backed in from $4.40 into $3.70 is the progressive Gangsta Granny.
Prepared by Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes, the four-year-old Written Tycoon mare won three on the trot before coming up against a very good filly in Autumn Glow in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes back in March.
She finished third that day without disgrace then met her again first-up on a Heavy (10) at Randwick in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality to go one better fresh with a game second only a half-length off the undefeated winner. That is some strong form lines to follow into this clash now.
Two other hopes are under $10 for the Sheraco win this season with Anthony & Sam Freedman trained Ameena ($8) and Bjorn Baker‘s resuming Doncaster Mile champ Stefi Magnetica ($9) who is also the second emergency for the Group 2 Theo Marks later on the card.
Kerrin McEvoy partners Tassort four-year-old Ameena for Emirates Park with the mare after her first victory since taking out last year’s Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes first-up.
While it has been over 12 months between wins, she has been strong at the top level running second in Adelaie’s Group 1 Robert Sangster and fourth in The Goodwood at her latest under two lengths behind Reserve Bank back in May.
Stefi Magnetica meanwhile scored a narrow upset over the Randwick mile in the Doncaster before her brave second behind Fangirl in the Group 1 Queen of the Turf.
She’s got the class but will need to show something special first-up going to 59kg at set weights plus penalties.
The 2025 Sheraco Stakes is set to run as Rosehill Race 7 at 3:25pm (AEST) on Saturday.
