There was an upset result to the Moir Stakes 2024 results at The Valley on Saturday with the short-distance sprint won by track specialist Mornington Glory for his now Group 1 winning Mornington trainer Gavin Bedggood.
The fit horse in the race, Bedggood’s six-year-old Shalaa gelding was third-up and flying making it a hat-trick of wins over the 1000m at Moonee Valley this prep.
The galloper was ridden by his last start hoop Ethan Brown who retained the ride in the Group 1 $750,000 Moir Stakes (1000m) and caught some of the big gun sprinters napping in their resuming runs for the spring.
“He was presented here in terrific order. He drew gate one and he flew the lids and just had an easy time of it,” Brown said of his winning ride in the Moir.
“(He was) fit, well. I was the beneficiary of a well-prepared horse for a great bunch of owners.”
Third in an Oakleigh Plate earlier in the year, Mornington Glory was a forgotten horse in the Moir Stakes markets going around at double-figures earlier in the week before firming into $8.50 through Ladbrokes.com.au by the time of jump.
With the coveted rails draw, the eventual Moir winner pinged the start and burned through to take up the lead early setting a contained speed.
“He took bad luck out of the equation today,” winning trainer Bedggood told Racing.com post-victory.
“He’s begun really well his last two starts and when he jumped a half in front of them today – there was no instruction to lead – but Browny just used his initiative and went with the horse and the rest is history.”
He went on to lead all-the-way holding out the late lunging Hayasugi with Clinton McDonald’s returning Blue Diamond winning filly placing first-up in a Group 1 as a three-year-old atoning for her dead last when 16th in the Golden Slipper back in March.
“Couldn’t have been happier with her. She’s just really stepped up this time in, she’s gone to be a big three-year-old and she was strong through the line, couldn’t [pull her up afterwards, so looking good for further,” Jamie Kah said after hoping off the runner-up Hayasugi.
It was a photo for third but the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Slipper winner Lady Of Camelot snared the final placing to complete the Moir Stakes trifecta.
“She was fantastic. She’s probably just looking for a bit further now she’s a bit older, she was a bit run off her feet there, but her last furlong was still very good. Lovely filly and privileged to get the ride on her today,” jockey Zac Lloyd said of the return of Lady Of Camelot.
The Moir is a key lead-up into the Group 1 $2 million Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes (1200m) on September 27 back at The Valley.
Mornington Glory is now into $8 through race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au in their futures 2024 Manikato Stakes odds online available in full by clicking here.
