Doncaster Mile 2024 Scratchings Update: #5 Zougotcha (19), #6 Golden Mile (1), #11 Attractable Semana
Prelude winner Another Wil is tipped to keep the victories coming on the quick back-up sitting top of 2024 Doncaster Mile betting at Randwick this weekend.
Royal Randwick hosts Day 1 of the coveted ‘The Championships’ on Saturday with the actioned headlined by the Group 1 $4 million Doncaster Mile (1600m).
Updated markets on the time-honoured classic at Ladbrokes.com.au have the in-form Street Boss four-year-old Another Wil as the one to beat at $4.
The Ciaron Maher-trained chestnut has won his past four on the trot in easier company including last weekend’s Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) at Rosehill by 2.25 lengths.
He carted 53kg to victory there and is now up notably in grade but down to 50kg with Jamie Kah retaining the ride from out wide.
Another Wil drew barrier 21 but will come into 17 of 20 if all emergencies come out of the capacity Doncaster Mile field.
History will be made should Another Wil salute as no horse has completed the Doncaster Prelude – Mile double in the same year.
Maher is after his maiden Doncaster Mile trophy and also saddles-up Detonator Jack ($15) in gate two, triple figure roughie Berkshire Shadow ($101) in 13, Semana ($34) in 17, and last start Australian Guineas winner Southport Tycoon ($17) who drew 20.
Nugget ($51) for the stable is also the first emergency in the Doncaster this year.
Think About It carries the 57kg Doncaster Mile top-weight this year and drew barrier 15 for jockey Sam Clipperton to overcome.
The Joe Pride-trained The Everest champion is at Doncaster Mile odds of $18 to win third-up and extend his brilliance to the 1600m distance.
Occupying the second line of Doncaster Mile betting at $5.50 is Celestial Legend for Les Bridge.
The three-year-old Dundeel colt is out to be the first youngster to win since Brutal (2019).
He is in terrific form this prep having won the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) and the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) at his past two starts.
Celestial Legend only had a narrow margin to spare on the line in the Randwick Guineas over Militarize, but he is right down from 56.5kg there to just 49kg on Saturday making him a standout contender.
Chris Waller’s fellow Dundeel colt Militarize also takes on the older horses in the Doncaster Mile boasting an excellent record at the track (5:2-2-1).
He is a three-time Group 1 winner already but hasn’t saluted since the Golden Rose in September last year.
Saturday sees him present rock hard fit fourth-up on the back of a third only a length off Veight at Rosehill on March 23 in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m).
Jockey Zac Purton comes aboard in the Doncaster from a lovely gate four draw, and Militarize with 54kg pays $10 to hand Waller his seventh success in the event.
Waller’s last Doncaster Mile victory was back in 2016 with the mighty Winx.
Along with Militarize this year he has five other final acceptors including four-length Group 3 Sky High Stakes winner Lindermann ($15), Kovalica ($17), and Zoustar mare Zougotcha ($17) who won the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) last time out.
The form around Lindermann particularly looks strong and was franked last weekend with the Sky High runner-up Kalapour coming out and winning the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) at 30/1.
The other single-figure Doncaster hope this season at $8.50 meanwhile is Japanese raider Obamburumai in gate eight with 55kg who won the $10 million The Golden Eagle in Sydney last year.
The Annable Neasham-trained Lady Laguna ($13) is also in the mix at a good price in on just 51kg and in stellar form having won the Canterbury Stakes two back before a narrow second in the George Ryder with 57kg.
