The giant killer Think It Over was back to his brilliant best upsetting the odds-on favourite Fangirl with a stylish performance off a gun ride by Nash Rawiller in the 2024 Verry Elleegant Stakes results at Randwick.
Trainer Chris Waller was chasing an emotional 11th victory in the recently renamed Group 1 $1 million Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m), previously known as the Chipping Norton Stakes, and was tipped to take it out with his Apollo Stakes winning mare Fangirl.
Fangirl settled last and came with a good run the closing stages, but she had given too much away to the Kerry Parker-trained marvel Think It Over who enjoyed another feature race upset over the queen.
He beat her home narrowly at this track and trip on Good going in the spring’s $1 million 7 Stakes (1600m), and with the sting out of the track today was enormous getting the job done once again.
Fresh he finished 2.8 lengths off Fangirl in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m), but the eight-year-old son of So You Think showed a terrific zest for racing with his flawless performance to snare the Verry Elleegant Stakes.
“Everyone thinks he’s a giant-killer, I just think he’s a giant,” Parker told Sky Thoroughbred Central after the win.
“I think they’ve got to get past him and he has proved that again today.”
Ridden quietly by Rawiller along the rails in fourth as resuming The Metropolitan winner Just Fine led them around, Think It Over ($8.50) saved ground sticking to the inside around the turn for home while the others moved off the fence.
That proved a master stroke by Rawiller who was quickly able to snare the lead, which he held all the way to the winning post with Fangirl ($1.30F) only able to run a length back second.
The fellow Waller-trained Lindermann ($14) rounded out the Verry Elleegant Stakes trifecta in third just ahead of Cascadian, while Just Fine faded to finish last.
“Nash took some short cuts, I’m sure that helped at the end, but he really bounced off his first-up run and I was looking forward to the challenge today,” Parker said.
“It’s always good to get a Group One under your belt.”
“He’s just a bottler. He doesn’t know he is an eight-year-old, he is loving it.”
Think It Over has now won just shy of $9 million throughout his marvelous career, and he has put the writing on the wall for a big autumn campaign with an eye on the Group 1 $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 13.
“He will just head towards the Queen Elizabeth, that’s our main goal this prep, so far so good,” he said.
“He is just a thrill, he’s the best. He loves racing so much.
“You wouldn’t think he’s an eight-year-old, he doesn’t think he’s an eight-year-old. He kept us on our toes down in the stalls today, he was in a bit of a mood. He’s had the game face on all week.
“I’m absolutely thrilled with the result.”
